Golf Links Delhi: Where Luxury Meets Lasting Community Stewardship
In the bustling heart of India's capital, luxury transcends mere high-end real estate to embody sustained stewardship. Golf Links, a meticulously maintained and serene neighborhood in Delhi, stands as a powerful testament to this philosophy. This enclave offers more than just expensive properties; it represents a curated environment shaped by decades of collective care.
The Curated Environment of Order and Beauty
Smooth internal roads free from typical urban congestion and encroachment, broad footpaths, and strategically placed streetlights create an atmosphere that feels both orderly and inviting. Manicured parks, hanging flower baskets adorning lamp posts, clear signage at every intersection, and a fountain surrounded by flowering plants elevate Golf Links from a standard residential zone to a carefully maintained sanctuary.
This environment reflects the consistent commitment of local residents and the Resident Welfare Association (RWA), who have maintained and upgraded civic amenities over decades while preserving the area's distinctive character. Their active collaboration with authorities, particularly the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), has ensured Golf Links remains both functional and vibrant.
Historical Roots and Architectural Continuity
As part of Lutyens' Delhi, Golf Links is defined by its striking bungalows, demarcated in 1952 on land that once formed part of the Delhi Golf Club (then known as Lodi Golf Club). These predominantly double-storey structures retain their original architectural essence, offering rare continuity between past and present.
"After Partition, many golf club members, particularly the British, left India, pushing the club toward closure," explained N K Jain, a nonagenarian resident since the colony's beginning. "The municipality issued an ultimatum: become self-sustaining or shut down. To raise funds, portions of land were sold, creating Golf Links and Kaka Nagar."
Jain, now 97, added that his father initially sought a plot in Chanakyapuri but chose Golf Links due to limited availability and concerns about plots near a nullah.
The Modest Beginnings of an Exclusive Colony
The colony's formal story began on August 31, 1952, with the first auction of 212 plots under a modest shamiana. Priced at approximately Rs 30 per square yard, the process was notably subdued compared to today's competitive bidding.
"Not all plots sold immediately. Their irregular shapes deterred buyers," said Ajay Mathur, President of Golf Links Association (GLA). "A second auction in December cleared remaining plots, some at discounted rates."
Mathur's family moved here in 1958 from congested Bhagirath Palace. "While relatives moved to Model Town and Safdarjung Airport, we chose further south to escape chaos," he recalled.
Preserving Character Through Community Action
A pivotal preservation moment occurred when the Land and Development Office proposed a market similar to Jor Bagh. "Resident C L Chopra challenged this in court, arguing no market was in the original layout," said Aangan Dalal, Secretary of Golf Links RWA. "The compromise allotted the plot to Red Cross, preserving our quiet, non-commercial nature."
Today, the community center serves as a vibrant hub, hosting meetings, gatherings, and sporting activities including badminton, basketball, table tennis, and a gymnasium, fostering strong community bonds.
Modern Challenges and Collective Solutions
Like any urban space, Golf Links faces challenges. Its topography makes it NDMC's lowest-lying colony, vulnerable to waterlogging. In 2020, heavy rains inundated several houses, revealing missing stormwater drainage system maps.
In 2022, GLA appealed to NDMC for urgent intervention as the situation recurred. This prompted deep desilting of stormwater drains after nearly a decade, plus construction of storage tanks for excess rainwater. Since then, no major waterlogging has occurred, demonstrating the power of collective action.
"Our area representatives, including MP Bansuri Swaraj and MLA Parvesh Verma, played constructive roles in resolving the issue through NDMC," Mathur noted. "The council regularly tracks horticulture and sanitation matters too."
A Model of Urban Preservation
Golf Links stands today not merely as a picturesque neighborhood but as an exemplary model of how history, community effort, and thoughtful preservation converge to sustain urban beauty. Through dedicated stewardship, residents have maintained a legacy that continues to define luxury living in Delhi.
