Thiruvananthapuram's Public Parks in Disrepair, Affecting Children's Summer Activities
As summer vacation approaches in Thiruvananthapuram, the poor condition of public parks is severely limiting outdoor options for children, raising significant concerns about their physical activity levels and social development. Key recreational facilities across the city have fallen into a state of neglect, with issues ranging from garbage accumulation to unsafe play structures.
Specific Parks Facing Severe Neglect
Several prominent parks are currently in unusable condition. Nehru Children's Park and the Cycle Park at Shanghumugham are overrun with garbage and weeds, with the cycling track blocked by undergrowth and a fallen tree that has not been cleared for months. Damaged equipment, plastic waste, and abandoned materials are scattered throughout the premises, while basic amenities continue to deteriorate.
At Veli Tourist Village, multiple play structures are rusted, broken, and unsafe, with sharp edges posing direct risks to children. The presence of stray dogs has further discouraged families from visiting, compounding the accessibility issues.
Official Responses and Contractual Failures
Officials have pointed to lapses in the private contracting system as a primary cause. District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) secretary Satish Miranda stated that the contractor responsible for maintaining the Shanghumugham park failed to respond to repeated notices. This has prompted authorities to initiate steps to cancel the contract and take over operations directly.
Similarly, the State Museum Children's Park remains in disrepair, with renovation work stalled for over 18 months. Many rides, including swings, slides, and a toy train, are unusable, while overgrown areas have significantly reduced accessible space. Officials attribute this delay to ongoing revenue recovery proceedings against the previous operator.
Expert Warnings on Long-Term Impacts
Experts are warning that the shrinking availability of safe outdoor spaces could have profound long-term effects on children. Potential consequences include:
- Reduced physical activity, leading to health issues
- Increased screen time as alternative entertainment
- Challenges in social and cognitive development due to limited peer interaction
The situation highlights a critical need for immediate intervention to restore these public spaces, ensuring children have safe environments for play and development during their summer break and beyond.
