The rich and diverse culinary tapestry of Odisha is set to take center stage in the state capital. The much-anticipated Odia Khadya Mahotsav, or Odia Food Festival, is scheduled to be held at the Exhibition Ground in Bhubaneswar from December 23 to December 29. This grand celebration of food is being organized by the Biswa Odia Pariwar, promising an immersive journey through the state's gastronomic heritage.
A Grand Feast from All Corners of Odisha
This year's festival aims to be a comprehensive showcase of Odia cuisine. Organizers have confirmed that the event will feature an impressive 140 stalls, each representing the unique flavors from all 30 districts of Odisha. From coastal delicacies to tribal specialties and everything in between, the festival is designed to be a one-stop destination for food lovers.
Sajjan Sharma, the president of Biswa Odia Pariwar, emphasized the festival's cultural significance. He stated that the event highlights how nutritious and delicious traditional foods are an integral part of the Odia lifestyle. The primary goal is to familiarize the new generation with authentic Odia food. To achieve this, the festival will display food preparation techniques, various indigenous ingredients, and distinct cooking styles categorized by their districts of origin.
Competitions, Discussions, and Honours
The Odia Khadya Mahotsav is far more than just a food fair; it is a vibrant cultural competition. A wide array of contests will be held to engage visitors and celebrate culinary skills. The planned competitions include:
- Odia food, painting, and pitha (rice cake) making.
- Categories for the best vegetarian, non-vegetarian, tribal, processed, and vegan food.
- Unique contests like pictorial food presentation, decorated bhog thali, and speed eating.
- Skill-based challenges such as cooking without fire, and "smelling, touching and telling" to identify ingredients.
Furthermore, the festival will host daily discussion sessions focused on Odia food culture. Renowned food researchers and authors of food culture books are scheduled to participate in these insightful conversations. Separate cooking competitions and quizzes will be organized for residents of apartments and colonies, students from hotel management colleges and schools, and even professional chefs from famous hotels.
A Gathering of Dignitaries and Entrepreneurs
The festival is expected to draw significant attention from the state's leadership. On various evenings throughout the event, dignitaries including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker, state ministers, MPs, MLAs, and other distinguished personalities are scheduled to attend and partake in the celebrations.
In a move to recognize contributions to Odia culture, the festival will also honour personalities who have played a pivotal role in promoting Odia food and traditions outside the state. Sharma also noted that the event will serve as a platform for many Odia food entrepreneurs to showcase their products and connect with a wider audience.
The Odia Khadya Mahotsav 2023 stands as a testament to Odisha's commitment to preserving and promoting its unique culinary identity. It offers a golden opportunity for both residents and visitors to delve deep into the flavors that define the state, ensuring that its rich food heritage is passed on to future generations.
