Nestled in the vibrant lanes of Mumbai's Bhendi Bazaar, a culinary treasure has been spreading joy one scoop at a time for over a century. A Legacy Born in 1887: From Clay Pots to Creamy Delights
Taj Ice Cream, located near Crawford Market, was founded in 1887 by Valilji Jalaji, a visionary from Kutch, Gujarat. Initially, he crafted a unique treat by mixing fruit chunks such as pineapple, grapefruit, and chikoo with milk and dates, chilling them in clay pots for traders. This innovative approach became a sensation long before ice became widely accessible.
As ice became more affordable, Jalaji evolved his creation into the creamy ice cream we know today. The tradition is now proudly upheld by the sixth-generation owner, Aamir Icecreamwala, and his father, Hatim, who continue to honor their ancestral roots with unwavering dedication.
The Secret Technique: Hand-Churning in Wooden Barrels
The magic behind Taj Ice Cream lies in a 138-year-old secret technique that eschews modern machinery. Each batch is meticulously hand-churned in wooden barrels using a copper 'sancha' canister from Jalaji's era. This process, free from preservatives, artificial colors, or softeners, relies solely on pure ingredients: milk, sugar, and fresh fruit.
Aamir Icecreamwala explains, "We still abide by the same technique that Jalaji introduced. Ice creams are manufactured in wooden barrels and hand-churned to achieve that signature creamy texture. The fruit mixed with cream is poured into a ‘sancha’ or copper canister from Jalaji’s time, making our recipe and technique legendary."
This labor-intensive method takes hours per batch, resulting in 16 exquisite flavors, including Alphonso mango, custard apple, strawberry, pineapple, chikoo, and the best-selling mixed fruit. The parlour sells approximately 500 kilograms monthly, with prices ranging from Rs 80 per cup to Rs 700–1000 per kilogram.
A Celebrity Favorite: Madhubala's Beloved Spot
Taj Ice Cream has long been a haunt for the stars, most notably the legendary actress Madhubala, who frequently ordered and raved about its delights. Other notable visitors include comedian Johnny Walker and politician Farooq Abdullah. Its fame has spread globally, with fans from cities like Kuwait, London, and Paris making special trips to Mumbai just for takeaway treats.
This enduring appeal underscores the parlour's status as more than just an ice cream shop—it's a piece of Mumbai's cultural heritage, inviting all to taste and believe in its timeless charm.
