In a decisive crackdown on food fraud, officials from the Commissionerate of Food Safety and Drug Control in Jaipur successfully intercepted a large-scale attempt to sell expired packaged food items. The operation was initiated on Wednesday following a critical tip-off received through the state's dedicated 181 helpline, highlighting the effectiveness of public vigilance in safeguarding consumer health.
Swift Action Leads to Raid and Seizure
Acting promptly on the complaint, a specialized team conducted a surprise raid at Messrs Athlete Distributor, located in the Kho Nagoriyan area of Jaipur. Chief Medical Health Officer (Jaipur II) Dr. Manish Mittal confirmed that the inspection was ordered immediately after the complaint was registered, underscoring the urgency of the response. During the raid, officials discovered approximately 3,000 cartons of non-dairy packaged food products from the renowned Amul brand. The seized items included a variety of goods such as noodles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and energy drinks, all of which had surpassed their expiry dates, posing significant health risks to consumers.
Allegations of Date Tampering and Illegal Practices
Investigations revealed alarming details about the distributor's operations. Officials alleged that expiry dates had been deliberately erased from around 1,000 cartons using chemical methods. The firm owner, Gagan Ahuja, was reportedly preparing to sell this stock after removing the original expiry markings and printing fresh dates to deceive buyers. During questioning, Ahuja allegedly admitted to learning these tampering techniques from online videos and planned to distribute the expired products through various online platforms, exploiting digital marketplaces for illicit gains.
Further scrutiny exposed additional regulatory violations. The inspection confirmed that the firm's food licence had expired, compounding the illegality of its activities. Ahuja reportedly told officials that the manufacturer had refused to take back the expired goods, prompting his decision to resort to fraudulent practices rather than dispose of the stock responsibly.
Consequences and Legal Measures
In response to these findings, the food safety team took stringent actions to prevent any public harm. All seized stock has been confiscated and is slated for destruction at the Jaipur Municipal Corporation dumping yard to ensure it does not enter the supply chain. Additionally, samples of select items were collected for thorough testing to assess potential contamination or health hazards.
Officials have announced that legal action will be pursued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, which could lead to severe penalties for the offenders. As an immediate measure, the premises of Messrs Athlete Distributor have been sealed, and the firm owner has been barred from engaging in any food-related business until further orders.
