Goa Cashew Fest 2026 Set to Showcase Feni and Launch Safe Driving Initiative
The upcoming Goa Cashew Fest 2026, scheduled from April 10 to 12 in Panaji, promises to be a vibrant celebration of the state's agricultural heritage while addressing critical community issues. Organized by the Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC), this fourth edition of the festival will not only promote traditional products like feni and cashew-based items but also spearhead a significant awareness campaign titled 'Drive Safe Goa'.
Focus on Safety and Sustainability
Deviya Rane, chairperson of GFDC, emphasized that while the festival offers numerous attractions, the 'Drive Safe Goa' campaign is a top priority. "We have a lot of things to showcase this time, but the most important aspect of the festival is our campaign 'Drive Safe Goa'," Rane stated. With a noticeable rise in road accidents across the region, the festival aims to leverage its platform to educate attendees about safe driving practices, blending cultural promotion with public safety.
Beyond safety, the event will delve into sustainability and rural livelihood support. Rane highlighted that the festival celebrates Goa's rich agricultural legacy, providing stakeholders with visibility and the public an opportunity to learn how the cashew industry has persevered amidst competition. "Goa has a special connection with cashews. It is not just some fruit. It has a legacy which needs to be highlighted," she remarked.
Expert Discussions and Industry Insights
The festival will feature expert-led sessions on key topics such as cashew cultivation techniques, feni production methods, and desilting processes. Industry stakeholders are set to share their experiences in navigating business challenges and adapting to new trends. This comes as feni has already secured a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, and efforts are underway to establish a cashew board, as announced by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in his recent budget.
Rane noted that since the festival's inception, there has been a renewed focus on rejuvenating cashew plantations in areas with high orchard concentrations. "Rejuvenation of cashew plantations in Quepem, Canacona, and Ponda has already started. The efforts have already started yielding results and the area under cashew cultivation has increased," she explained. Experts have warned that aging trees are a primary factor behind declining cashew yields, making these revitalization efforts crucial for the industry's future.
Festival Highlights and Entertainment
Attendees can look forward to 32 food stalls offering a diverse array of cashew products, alongside beverage stalls. Some stalls will be managed by self-help groups, fostering community involvement. The evenings will be enlivened with entertainment programs, including live performances. Additionally, one or two stalls will demonstrate traditional methods of crushing cashew apples and extracting brew, offering a glimpse into the historical practices of feni production.
Overall, the Goa Cashew Fest 2026 aims to blend tradition with innovation, safety with celebration, and economic growth with environmental stewardship, positioning itself as a key event for both locals and visitors interested in Goa's cultural and agricultural landscape.
