Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Inaugurates Renovated Poompuhar Tourism Complex

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the renovated Poompuhar tourism complex in Mayiladuthurai district via videoconferencing on Monday. The virtual ceremony marked a significant milestone in the state's efforts to revitalize its cultural and historical tourism infrastructure.

Restoration of a Historic Tourism Site

The Poompuhar tourism centre was first developed in 1973 by then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. The complex features several important cultural structures including the Silapathikaram Art Gallery, Ilanji Mandram, Pavai Mandram, Nedungal Mandram, and a tourist guest house. Despite its historical significance, the site had been neglected for nearly a decade until 2021.

After the present government was formed, restoration efforts gained significant momentum. In 2023, the government decided to undertake comprehensive renovation work that included:

  • Erecting a boundary wall for enhanced security
  • Establishing a dedicated parking area
  • Creating an information centre for visitors
  • Installing a cloak room facility
  • Constructing paved pathways throughout the complex
  • Adding shaded seating areas
  • Building modern toilet facilities
  • Upgrading the electrical infrastructure

The renovation project was completed at a cost of Rs 23.6 crore, representing a substantial investment in Tamil Nadu's tourism sector.

New Tourism Projects Launched

During the same event, Chief Minister Stalin laid the foundation for two additional tourism projects. The first involves renovation work at Hotel Tamil Nadu in Thirukadaiyur, which will be carried out at a cost of Rs 5 crore. This establishment will receive:

  • A new restaurant facility
  • Modern electrical fittings
  • Upgraded furniture throughout

The second project focuses on infrastructure development near the historic Danish Fort in Tharangambadi. With an allocation of Rs 3 crore, this initiative will include:

  • Construction of new pavements
  • Creation of additional parking spaces
  • Establishment of a ticket counter
  • Building a power room facility
  • Installing modern toilet facilities
  • Improving the electrical setup in the area

Expected Impact on Tourism

Tourist officer L Muthusamy expressed optimism about the completed upgrades, stating, "The completed upgrades will greatly increase tourist arrivals and revenue. Additional development for the centre is on the pipeline." The renovations are expected to significantly enhance the visitor experience while preserving the cultural heritage of these important sites.

The inauguration event at Poompuhar was attended by Backward Classes Welfare Minister Siva V Meyyanathan, the district collector, and other government officials. Their presence underscored the importance of these tourism initiatives for the region's economic and cultural development.

These projects represent a comprehensive approach to tourism development in Tamil Nadu, combining historical preservation with modern amenities to create attractive destinations for both domestic and international visitors.
