Chennai Beach Food Fest: 38 SHG Stalls to Serve 235+ Dishes Dec 21-24
Chennai SHG Food Festival at Besant Nagar from Dec 21

The vibrant Besant Nagar beach in Chennai is set to become a culinary paradise this December, thanks to a special initiative celebrating women entrepreneurs. The Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation is organizing a grand food festival entirely run by women's self-help groups (SHGs). Scheduled from December 21 to 24, this event aims to highlight the culinary skills and entrepreneurial spirit of women across the state.

A Feast for the Senses: What to Expect

Visitors can look forward to an incredible gastronomic journey. A total of 38 food stalls will be set up, offering an astounding array of more than 235 traditional and regional food varieties sourced from different districts of Tamil Nadu. The menu promises something for every palate, featuring biryanis, popular street food, nutritious millet-based dishes, fresh seafood, decadent sweets, and savory snacks.

In addition to the main stalls, 12 theme-based stalls will showcase specialized products. These will include traditional snacks, organic items, egg-based foods, products made from palm, and healthy herbal beverages. This diverse offering ensures the festival caters to both traditional food lovers and those seeking unique, health-conscious options.

Promoting Economic Self-Reliance

This festival is much more than a food event; it is a cornerstone of the state government's efforts to foster economic independence among women. Officials state that the initiative reflects active promotion of livelihood schemes where SHG members engage in food-based enterprises to earn a steady income. By providing a direct platform to the public, the festival empowers these women entrepreneurs, showcasing their commitment to quality, taste, and high hygiene standards.

Event Schedule and Inauguration

The festival will be formally inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, at 4 pm on December 21 at Besant Nagar Beach. On the inaugural day, the stalls will be open from 4 pm to 9 pm. For the subsequent three days, from December 22 to 24, the festival timings will be extended, running from noon to 9 pm.

To add to the festive atmosphere, cultural programmes will be held in the evenings throughout the event. Best of all, entry will be completely free for all visitors, making it an accessible and family-friendly outing.

This Chennai food festival stands as a testament to the culinary talent and business acumen of Tamil Nadu's women, turning the beach into a hub of flavor and female empowerment.
