Ludhiana's Iconic War Memorial Restored to Original Site After Three Decades
Commuters in Ludhiana witnessed a powerful historical revival on Tuesday as the statue of Maha Vir Chakra awardee Major Bhupinder Singh and his captured Patton tank were triumphantly returned to Bharat Nagar Chowk. This monumental move concludes a thirty-year period of displacement within the city, reestablishing the war memorial as a formidable symbol of Punjab's martial pride at one of the busiest intersections in the industrial hub.
Precision Overnight Operation Ensures Safe Relocation
In a meticulously planned overnight operation, municipal corporation crews executed the complex shifting process from 11 PM on Monday to 6 AM on Tuesday. To safeguard the heavy relics, officials deployed a specialized trailer and three heavy-duty cranes, emphasizing the need for extreme caution due to the weight of the tank and the delicacy of the statue.
Zonal Municipal Commissioner Jasdev Singh Sekhon highlighted the challenges, stating, "We had to be very careful in lifting the armour and stone as these are heavy. It took three cranes to manage the process. The rest of the installation will proceed accordingly." The MC has already completed the circular base for the tank, and while the statue is temporarily positioned to one side, it will be permanently mounted on its own pedestal within the coming days.
Logistical Details and Community Impact
The relocation was initiated following a directive from Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain on January 29, with the project fast-tracked despite some local debate over the ₹14 lakh tender cost. To accommodate the war memorial, a large cycle sculpture previously installed by a private firm at the chowk was removed last week.
Beyond the physical installation, the MC plans to enhance the site with educational signage detailing Major Bhupinder Singh's military contributions, aiming to inspire passing citizens and educate them about this legacy of gallantry.
A Storied History of Nomadic Displacement
Major Bhupinder Singh, a native of Harnampura village in Ludhiana, was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for exemplary leadership and devotion to duty during the 1965 War with Pakistan. The monument itself has a nomadic history in the city:
- Originally installed at Bharat Nagar Chowk on October 30, 1979, with the Patton tank pointed symbolically toward Pakistan.
- Relocated to the Govt College for Girls on December 7, 1995, due to rising traffic concerns.
- Moved to Nehru Rose Garden in September 2020 to accommodate construction of the Ferozepur Road elevated flyover.
Following the completion of the flyover, local residents and veterans' groups intensified demands to restore the fallen war hero's memorial to its prominent original location, culminating in this successful relocation effort.
The return of this historic war memorial not only honors Major Bhupinder Singh's sacrifice but also reinforces Ludhiana's connection to its rich military heritage, serving as a daily reminder of valor for generations to come.
