Uttar Pradesh Government Approves Major Funding for Folk Art Museum Expansion
The Uttar Pradesh culture department has sanctioned a substantial amount of Rs 14.98 crore for the expansion of the Folk Art Museum in Lucknow. This initiative aims to transform the museum into a premier heritage destination by introducing new attractions and enhancing exhibition spaces, thereby preserving and promoting traditional art forms for a broader audience.
Recent Renovations and Museum Background
This expansion follows a recent renovation project worth Rs 3 crore, which focused on improving the museum's infrastructure. Key upgrades included waterproofing the building, installing new marble flooring, and enhancing stairways to ensure smoother visitor movement. Additionally, focused lighting was implemented to better showcase exhibits, and wall paintings were installed to enrich the visual appeal.
Established in 1989, the Folk Art Museum is part of the State Museum and is located within the Lucknow Zoo. It is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of Uttar Pradesh's diverse folk arts. Currently, the museum features four galleries representing regions such as Braj, Avadh, Bhojpur, Bundelkhand, and Rohilkhand. Its extensive collection includes dioramas of folk dances, folk musical instruments, folk paintings, jewellery, masks, terracotta, pottery, toys, costumes, and items crafted from wood, iron, and stone.
Details of the Proposed Expansion
The expansion plan is designed to offer visitors an immersive experience into early human life and rural traditions. It will feature recreated village scenes and models of prehistoric cave walls. New additions will include 25 hanging carpets, an interactive textile thread display, and traditional tribal cottages that reflect indigenous lifestyles.
To further promote cultural engagement, a dedicated workshop area and a stage for folk performances are being developed. These facilities will host live demonstrations and cultural events, allowing visitors to interact directly with folk art practices.
The museum will also showcase specialized artworks, such as zardozi and textile crafts from Varanasi, Mirzapur, Agra, and Lucknow, along with Gorakhpur's renowned terracotta sculptures. A children's activity zone is planned to introduce young visitors to folk art and craft through interactive sessions and live demonstrations, fostering early appreciation for heritage.
Official Statements and Future Impact
Culture and Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized the initiative's importance, stating, "The initiative would help preserve folk art and craft traditions and ensure wider awareness about the state's rich folk heritage." Principal Secretary of Culture and Tourism, Amrit Abhijaat, added, "The upgraded facilities are intended to offer visitors a more comfortable and visually engaging experience while preserving the authenticity of traditional displays."
This expansion is expected to significantly boost tourism and cultural education in Uttar Pradesh, positioning the Folk Art Museum as a key destination for both local and international visitors interested in exploring India's traditional arts.
