TTD Ghee Crisis Intensifies as Stocks Plummet Amid Laddu Adulteration Scandal
The long-standing ghee controversy at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has escalated into a critical supply crisis, with no resolution in sight nearly two years after the sacred laddu adulteration row first erupted. Former TTD chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy sounded the alarm during a press conference in Tirupati on Monday, revealing that ghee reserves at the temple trust are dangerously low.
Critical Shortage Threatens Daily Prasadam Distribution
Bhumana Karunakar Reddy disclosed that TTD currently possesses a mere 3,500 kilograms of ghee, a stark contrast to the daily requirement of 15,000 to 17,000 kilograms needed to prepare approximately 3.5 lakh sacred laddus and other Annaprasadams offered to Lord Venkateswara. These offerings are subsequently distributed to devotees visiting the hill shrine every single day.
The former chairman expressed profound concern over the rapidly depleting stocks, emphasizing that this shortage directly impacts the core ritualistic functions of one of the world's richest and most visited Hindu temples.
Truck Accident Fuels Political and Divine Allegations
The situation took a dramatic turn following a significant incident on Sunday. A container truck transporting 21 tonnes of cow ghee from Indapur Dairy overturned near the Chitravathi bridge in Kadapa district. Bhumana highlighted that such a mishap involving TTD's sacred supply is unprecedented in the institution's storied history.
In a charged statement, he alleged that the accident symbolizes "Lord Venkateswara's fury" directed at the current ruling establishment for embroiling the holy laddu prasadam in prolonged political controversy. He vehemently urged the government to cease blaming opposition parties like the YSRCP and instead prioritize stabilizing the essential ghee supply chain for Tirumala.
TTD Authorities Downplay Crisis, Cite Buffer Stocks
In response to mounting reports of a ghee scarcity, TTD officials confirmed the Indapur Dairy truck accident but moved swiftly to reassure devotees. Authorities stated that alternate procurement arrangements have been activated to prevent any disruption in the daily ghee supply required for prasadam preparation.
TTD representatives maintained that the temple currently holds a buffer stock of seven lakh laddus, and that supplies from two other dairies are continuing uninterrupted. "There is absolutely no need for concern among the devotees," officials asserted, attempting to project an image of operational normalcy despite the underlying supply chain challenges.
This official stance, however, stands in sharp contrast to the alarming figures presented by the former chairman, highlighting a significant disconnect in the narrative surrounding the temple's preparedness. The controversy underscores deeper issues of supply chain management, quality control, and the politicization of religious institutions, leaving devotees anxious about the sanctity and continuity of the sacred offerings at Tirumala.
