Panaji's Shigmotsav Festival Illuminates the City with Cultural Splendor
On Saturday evening, the state capital of Goa, Panaji, was enveloped in festive glitter and the rhythmic beats of dhol drums, celebrating its rich cultural heritage through the annual Shigmotsav festival. Defying the summer heat, numerous tourists thronged the streets from the old secretariat to the Kala Academy, eager to witness the ever-colorful and magnificent float parade that defines this traditional event.
Festival Kickoff with Rhythmic Dances and Mythological Floats
The parade commenced with the energetic lezim dance shortly after 4:30 PM, setting a lively tone for the evening. The floats, intricately designed based on Indian mythological stories, captivated onlookers with their artistic brilliance. Adding to the enchantment, a folk dance competition featuring 20 troupes left the crowd spellbound, while a fancy dress competition served as an additional attraction, drawing cheers and applause from attendees.
Adaptations for Election Code and Unwavering Spirit
This year, in adherence to the code of conduct in place for the city corporation elections, organizers made adjustments by reducing the number of participants in the romtamell, a ritualistic Shigmo dance, from 500 to 150. Despite this change, locals emphasized that the festival's vibrancy remained undiminished. Shirpad Chopdekar, a resident, stated, "It in no way indicated that this year's parade was any less than last year's," highlighting the community's commitment to preserving the event's essence.
Local and Tourist Perspectives on Cultural Immersion
Many locals attended the parade with their children, aiming to expose them to Goa's unique cultural treasures. Sandeep Naik, a parade attendee, shared, "We brought our kids here so they can see Goa's traditions beyond the beaches. The costumes and folk dances are beautiful, and the whole atmosphere is so joyful." International visitors also expressed admiration, with Liam O'Donnel, a tourist from the United Kingdom experiencing Shigmotsav for the first time, remarking, "I didn't know much about Shigmotsav before coming here, but the cultural performances and the vibrant parade really impressed me. It feels authentic and deeply rooted in local traditions."

The event was graced by Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, along with Panaji Shigmotsav Samiti president Srinivas Dempo and secretary Shantaram Naik. Minister Khaunte underscored the festival's significance, noting, "Shigmo float parades are being conducted across Goa, depicting the state's folklore. Shigmo indicates the richness of our cultural history. International as well as domestic tourists come to bask in the joy of this festival." This endorsement reinforces Shigmotsav's role in promoting Goa's cultural identity and boosting tourism, offering a glimpse into the region's heritage beyond its popular coastal attractions.
