NEW DELHI: A historic milestone has been reached in the annual Haj pilgrimage as the first contingent of pilgrims departed for Saudi Arabia on Saturday. The comprehensive data reveals that an unprecedented 5,446 Muslim women will be traveling as "Ladies Without Mehram" (LWM) for the sacred journey this year. Kerala has once again emerged as the frontrunner, contributing a remarkable 4,477 women to this significant category.
Largest Contingent Since Policy Reforms
This year's group represents the largest contingent of women in the LWM category since 2018, when transformative policy changes were first implemented. These reforms specifically enable Muslim women aged 45 years and above to undertake the Haj pilgrimage without a male companion, provided their religious school of thought (Maslak) permits such travel. The policy mandates that these women must travel in organized groups of four or more individuals. Additionally, single women within the same age bracket are also eligible to apply under these revised guidelines.
Overall Pilgrimage Statistics and Allocation
The broader pilgrimage landscape for this year is equally noteworthy. A total of 175,025 pilgrims are anticipated to participate in the Haj journey from India. The Government of India's total quota has been strategically divided, with 70% allocated to the Haj Committee of India and the remaining 30% designated for Haj Group Organizers. This distribution ensures both structured coordination and diverse participation channels for the devout travelers.
The increasing number of women embarking on the Haj without male companions highlights a progressive shift in pilgrimage accessibility and religious participation.
