Massive Turnout for Annual Chandanotsavam Festival at Simhachalam Temple
In a remarkable display of devotion and organization, the historic Lord Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Simhachalam witnessed a peaceful and largely hassle-free nijarupa darshan on Monday. Over 1.5 lakh devotees gathered at the 11th-century hilltop shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu's Varaha-Narasimha avatar to witness this sacred event where the thick sandalwood paste covering the idol is removed, revealing its original form.
Enhanced Security and Coordination Ensure Peaceful Event
Mindful of last year's tragic accident where seven devotees lost their lives due to a collapsed wall in the queue lines, authorities deployed nearly 3,000 police personnel to maintain order and safety. The extensive coordination among all departments resulted in the annual Chandanotsavam festival passing off smoothly without causing significant inconvenience to the massive gathering of devotees.
Devotees began settling in the queue lines from Sunday evening itself, demonstrating their dedication to experiencing this rare spiritual opportunity. The temple authorities had made 40,000 darshan tickets available through both online and offline channels in various denominations, but the crowd far exceeded this number, with many opting for free darshan after failing to secure tickets.
VIP Presence and Traditional Ceremonies
The first three hours of the morning were primarily reserved for VIPs, including several ministers and MLAs along with their families. Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapati Raju, who serves as the hereditary trustee of the temple and belongs to the royal family of Vizianagaram, performed the traditional ceremony of presenting silk robes to the deity when the temple opened in the early hours of Monday.
Later in the day, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita presented silk clothes on behalf of the state government, continuing the ceremonial traditions associated with the festival. Several other prominent political figures attended the darshan, including Minister Kollu Ravindra, MPs CM Ramesh, Kalisetti Appala Naidu, and Sribharat, along with MLAs Vamsikrishna, Panchakarla Ramesh Babu, and Sundarapu Vijaya Kumar.
Transportation and Devotee Experiences
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) deployed numerous special buses to transport devotees from various parts of Visakhapatnam city and nearby districts to the temple. This transportation support proved crucial in managing the massive influx of pilgrims to the hilltop location.
"The temple management may not have arranged a sufficient number of tickets but made excellent arrangements for devotees compared to previous years," shared Ramu Naidu, a devotee from the Chodavaram area. "We had darshan within two hours, though we had to wait in the queue lines from Sunday night itself."
The unique idol at Simhachalam temple combines the faces of both Varaha and Narasimha avatars of Lord Vishnu and remains covered in sandalwood paste throughout the year. The annual Chandanotsavam festival provides the only opportunity for devotees to witness the nijarupa darshan of the presiding deity, making it one of the most significant events in the region's religious calendar.
