The city of Patna ushered in the New Year 2024 with immense cheer, deep-rooted tradition, and a strong sense of community, as vibrant midnight festivities were organized by railway officials and army personnel at the Khagaul and Danapur cantonment areas.
Official Venues Buzzed with Festive Fervor
Elaborate preparations transformed the Danapur cantonment Army mess and the Danapur divisional railway manager’s (DRM) office into hubs of celebration. According to Col (retd) V K Singh of the Bihar ex-servicemen association, both locations were adorned with colourful balloons, festoons, and lights, creating a perfect festive atmosphere. Railway officials, army officers, and their staff members gathered with families to welcome the new beginning with full enthusiasm.
Midnight Peaks and Nostalgic Reunions
As the clock struck twelve, the celebrations reached their peak. In Khagaul and Anisabad, young residents poured onto the streets, cheering and bursting crackers, filling the air with joy and excitement. Music, laughter, and fireworks defined the mood, as noted by local resident Mukesh Kumar.
Inside the official premises, parties with special culinary arrangements kept the spirit high. The gatherings continued late, with participants sharing hopes for the future, mentioned Col (retd) Om Prakash. Adding a uniquely nostalgic layer to the night was the presence of members of the Anglo-Indian community who had migrated but returned specifically to celebrate with old friends in Khagaul.
A Touch of Nostalgia and Cultural Harmony
Their reunion turned into a walk down memory lane. They fondly recalled past traditions where the festive season began with Christmas and extended through to New Year's Day in the late 1970s. Social activist Pradip Priyadarshi highlighted how they shared stories, underscoring the strong sense of togetherness and cultural harmony that characterized celebrations of earlier decades.
Danapur resident Rita Sinha perfectly encapsulated the evening, stating the celebrations were marked by unity, tradition, and joy. "The combination of official gatherings, youthful enthusiasm, and nostalgic reunions made the midnight and daylong celebrations a memorable start to the New Year," she said. The event stood as a testament to Patna's community spirit, seamlessly blending official protocol with heartfelt tradition.
