Born on January 6, 1942, in Ramdasspur village near Alawalpur in Jalandhar district, Sant Niranjan Dass was immersed early in the spiritual environment of Dera Sachkhand Ballan. At just eight years old, he began living with Swami Sarwan Dass, who prophetically renamed him "Hawai Gar" (speedy man), foreshadowing his disciplined and responsible leadership. Upon assuming the gaddi on July 25, 1994, he inherited not merely a religious seat but a profound legacy of reform centered on dignity, equality, and fearlessness.
Under his guidance, the Dera expanded its mission beyond spirituality into tangible social service. Advocate Satpal Virdi, former general secretary of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, highlighted initiatives such as the Sarwan Dass Charitable Eye Hospital, Sarwan Dass Model School, and numerous educational, religious, and healthcare projects in Punjab and Varanasi. These efforts have provided relief to thousands, reinforcing the Dera's role as a provider of welfare and dignity.
Global Outreach and Institutional Expansion
Sant Niranjan Dass has also carried the message of Guru Ravidass across continents, establishing Guru Ghars in Europe, North America, and beyond. This global outreach has transformed Dera Sachkhand Ballan into a worldwide spiritual network, blending spiritual stewardship with social upliftment. The establishment of Shri Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Mandir at Seer Govardhanpur, Varanasi, initiated by Sant Sarwan Dass and strengthened under Sant Niranjan Dass, anchors the Dera as a pan-Indian religious authority.
Navigating Crisis and Fostering Self-Assertion
The Dera entered a dynamic phase under Sant Niranjan Dass, marked by institutional growth and increasing self-assertion. A pivotal moment occurred in May 2009 with the attack on Sant Niranjan Dass and the assassination of Sant Rama Nand in Vienna, which triggered unrest in Punjab's Doaba region and exposed tensions around religious identity. In response, in early 2010, the Dera announced the formation of the Ravidassia religion, formally distancing itself from Sikh structures and installing the Amrit Bani Satguru Ravidass Maharaj Ji to symbolize theological independence.
Despite resistance and clashes, this move was seen by supporters as restoring religious autonomy. Throughout this period, Sant Niranjan Dass demonstrated restrained and strategic leadership, emphasizing organizational stability, peaceful assertion, and continued institution-building, including development work like gold plating the Varanasi temple dome and expanding pilgrim facilities.

Even as the Ravidassia community's assertiveness grew—evidenced by the Election Commission rescheduling Punjab Assembly elections in 2022 for Guru Ravidass Jayanti—the Dera upheld its tradition of non-partisanship. This stance underscores its role as a custodian of Guru Ravidass's vision of Begumpura, a casteless and fear-free society.
