The Odisha government has launched an ambitious initiative to honor the state's legendary figures by transforming their birthplaces into vibrant heritage destinations. In the first phase of the Baraputra Aitihya Gram Yojana, the state has identified the native villages of 25 eminent personalities who played pivotal roles in shaping Odisha's social, cultural, and literary landscape.
Preserving Legacy Through Heritage Museums
Under this new scheme, the residential houses of these Odia icons, which include renowned freedom fighters and social reformers, will be meticulously developed and conserved. The primary objective is to document and institutionalize their immense contributions and sacrifices for future generations. Each location will be converted into a comprehensive heritage museum.
The Odia Language, Literature and Culture department, which is implementing the project, states that these museums will be equipped with modern infrastructure. This will include interpretation centres, libraries, and open-air theatres. To make them engaging for all visitors, the sites will also feature children's parks and conference halls.
A Boost for Local Economy and Tourism
A key aspect of the scheme is its focus on community benefit and sustainable tourism. Each heritage site will have stalls selling authentic local cuisine, handloom products, and handicrafts. This initiative is designed to provide direct employment opportunities to local residents, linking cultural preservation with economic development.
Furthermore, statues of the honored 'Baraputras' or 'sons of the soil' will be installed at their respective houses. The state government has allocated a substantial budget for this project, with plans to spend up to ₹15 crore per birthplace. For the inaugural phase covering 25 sites, the total estimated expenditure stands at a significant ₹345 crore.
Phased Implementation and Future Vision
Officials have indicated that the rollout will be phased. The success and learnings from Phase I will determine the selection of birthplaces and sites related to other eminent personalities in subsequent phases. To ensure the scheme's longevity, its provisions will be incorporated into the state's annual budget, guaranteeing continuity and sustained implementation.
Odisha's Culture Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, emphasized the multifaceted goals of the initiative. He stated that it aims to preserve the rich legacy of Odisha's great sons and daughters while actively promoting cultural tourism. The scheme strategically creates opportunities for local livelihoods through heritage-based economic activities.
To keep the legacy alive and engaging, these heritage destinations will regularly host cultural performances and interactive sessions. These events will be based on the lives, ideas, and core values of the celebrated icons, ensuring their thoughts continue to inspire the public.
