Odisha Law Minister Reviews Jagannath Temple Ratna Bhandar Inventory Preparations

Bhubaneswar: Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan conducted a comprehensive review on Monday of the meticulous preparations for the upcoming inventory of the Jagannath temple's sacred Ratna Bhandar, which is scheduled to commence this Wednesday. The minister provided firm assurances that the state government is fully prepared for this significant undertaking, and the entire exercise will strictly follow the approved standard operating procedures to ensure precision and integrity.

Digital Preservation with Advanced 3D Scanning Technology

During the review, Minister Harichandan highlighted that the temple's invaluable jewellery collection will undergo a state-of-the-art digital preservation process. This initiative will utilize advanced 3D scanning technology to create detailed digital records, ensuring the protection of this cultural heritage for future generations while promoting transparency.

"Specialized scanners will be employed to capture every ornament from multiple angles, generating precise 3D models that accurately depict shape, size, weight, intricate carvings, and surface textures," Harichandan explained. "These digital models will be securely stored in a dedicated database, with each catalogue entry including comprehensive details such as dimensions, gem types, and jewellery classifications."

The minister further clarified that all findings from this inventory will be meticulously cross-referenced with the historical 1978 audit report to maintain continuity and accuracy. He reiterated a crucial point: no valuation of the Ratna Bhandar's articles will be conducted during this process, focusing solely on documentation and preservation.

Objectives and Team Structure for the Inventory

The primary objectives of this ambitious initiative are threefold:

  • Safeguarding the temple's priceless cultural heritage through modern technological means.
  • Maintaining strict accountability and transparency in the management of these sacred artifacts.
  • Providing digital access for scholars, historians, and devotees worldwide, eliminating the need to handle the original items and thereby reducing risk of damage.

On February 16, the temple's administrative body established two specialized teams to oversee the inventory process:

  1. The Supervisory Team: This group, responsible for monitoring all proceedings, includes the chief administrator, two members from the high-level committee on Ratna Bhandar, and one member of the sub-committee.
  2. The Handling Team: Tasked with the actual auditing of gems and ornaments, this team comprises the chief administrator, the HLC chairman, a servitor from the temple managing committee, four additional servitors, six empanelled goldsmiths from a public sector bank, two certified gemologists, two officials from the Reserve Bank of India, and two professional photographers.

Budget Allocation and Government Commitment

The Odisha state government has demonstrated its commitment to this heritage preservation project by allocating a substantial budget of Rs 5 crore specifically for the Ratna Bhandar inventory exercise. This funding ensures that all necessary resources, equipment, and expertise are available to conduct the inventory with the highest standards of care and professionalism.

Minister Harichandan emphasized that this digital preservation effort represents a landmark step in combining traditional reverence with modern technology, setting a precedent for heritage management across India. The inventory's successful completion will create an enduring digital legacy of the Jagannath temple's treasures while maintaining their spiritual and historical significance for generations to come.
