Historic Episcopal Ordination Held for Udupi Diocese's Second Bishop
The episcopal ordination and consecration celebration of Rev Leslie Clifford D'Souza as the second Bishop of the Udupi Diocese was a momentous event held at the Milagres College Grounds on Monday. This significant religious ceremony marked a new chapter in the diocese's pastoral journey, drawing a massive gathering of clergy and faithful.
Ceremony Led by Distinguished Church Leaders
The episcopal ordination was conferred by Rev Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, who served as the principal consecrator. He was joined by co-consecrators Archbishop of Bangalore Rev Peter Machado and the apostolic administrator of Udupi Diocese, Fr Gerald Isaac Lobo. The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Archbishop Rev Leopoldo Girelli, along with an impressive assembly of over 30 bishops, 300 priests, an equal number of nuns, and approximately 6,000 faithful.
A Milestone Appointment for the Diocese
Appointed by Pope Leo XIV on January 31, Rev D'Souza now becomes the second shepherd of the Diocese of Udupi. This appointment represents a crucial milestone in the diocese's development since its establishment in 2012, highlighting its growth and spiritual significance in the region.
Solemn Liturgical Rites and Felicitations
The rite of ordination included the proclamation of the Papal Bull, which formally appointed the bishop, followed by the solemn liturgical rites of episcopal consecration. Fr Steevan Dsouza, chancellor of the Diocese of Udupi, read out the official letter from the Holy Catholic Church. Rev Peter Paul Saldhanha, Bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore, delivered blessings to the congregation.
A solemn public felicitation programme was organized to honour the newly ordained Bishop. This was followed by a moment of honour where the Apostolic Nuncio and Archbishop of Goa and Daman were felicitated. Later, the Diocese of Udupi extended its felicitations to Bishop Leslie Clifford D'Souza, celebrating his new role with reverence and joy.

In his heartfelt address, Bishop D'Souza expressed profound gratitude to God, his family, his mentors, and the faithful. He humbly acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead but affirmed his unwavering trust in divine providence. "Together, let us build a Church rooted in love, service and truth," he stated, inspiring the congregation with his vision for the future.
Rev Peter Machado spoke highly of the retiring Bishop Emeritus, Rev Gerald Isaac Lobo, appreciating his exemplary service and immense contributions. He noted Lobo's dedication in both the Diocese of Shimoga and in nurturing the Infant Diocese of Udupi for over 13.5 years, describing him as a visionary shepherd whose efforts laid a strong foundation for the diocese's growth. Rev Lobo urged everyone to extend wholehearted cooperation to the new bishop, ensuring a smooth transition and continued spiritual guidance.
