In Mysuru, actor and social activist Ahimsa Chetan made a powerful statement about Gautama Buddha's legacy. He said describing Buddha as the greatest human being in the last 2,000 years of human history would be no exaggeration at all.
Beyond Rituals: Practicing Buddha's Teachings
Chetan stressed a crucial point for followers. He explained that merely offering flowers or lighting lamps before a statue of Buddha holds little meaning. True devotion, he argued, comes from sincerely following and practicing the Buddha's principles in everyday life.
"Rituals alone are empty," Chetan implied. "The real tribute is to live by his teachings."
Event and Tribute to Ambedkar
Chetan delivered these remarks at the Suggi Sambhrama event. The International Human Development and Upliftment Association (IHDUA) organized the program. It took place at the Ramagovinda Auditorium on Sunday.
During his speech, Chetan also highlighted the monumental contribution of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He pointed to Ambedkar's creation of Navayana as his greatest achievement. This path, Chetan said, reflected Ambedkar's deep and profound engagement with Buddha and Buddhist philosophy.
Ambedkar's Steadfast Vision
Chetan recalled the challenging circumstances Ambedkar faced. While drafting India's constitution, he worked alongside many ideological opponents. Despite this, Ambedkar remained completely steadfast in his vision for social justice.
Describing Navayana, Chetan called it a unique and historic movement. He noted that Ambedkar formally established this path on Ashoka Vijaya Dashami. He did so alongside nearly 400,000 followers. This was a significant moment, as only about 200,000 people in India identified as Buddhists at that time.
Perspectives on a Revolution
Senior theatre director Prasanna also shared his observations at the event. He stated that Ambedkar led a revolution that emerged directly from the untouchable community. Prasanna emphasized that Ambedkar's work empowered the oppressed. His ultimate goal, Prasanna noted, was the complete annihilation of the caste system.
Cultural Presentations
The event featured cultural performances as well. Students from Vinayaka Jnana Vidya Shale in Mullur, Jayapura Hobli, presented a 20-minute play. Their performance added a creative dimension to the day's discussions.
The program saw the presence of several other dignitaries. TS Channesh, Dr. Amar Kumar, Ashok Kumar, and BR Manjunath were also in attendance, contributing to the event's significance.
