Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a heartfelt tribute to the revered spiritual leader Sri Sathya Sai Baba during his birth centenary celebrations on Wednesday, emphasizing how the late guru's teachings continue to illuminate lives worldwide.
National Honors for a Global Spiritual Icon
In a significant gesture of recognition, the Prime Minister officially unveiled a ₹100 commemorative coin and a special collection of postage stamps dedicated to preserving Sai Baba's legacy. The ceremony attracted prominent figures including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, and actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
"Sri Sathya Sai Baba's centenary celebration is not merely a festival but a divine blessing," Modi expressed during his address. "Although Sai Baba is no longer physically present, his affection and dedication to service continue directing crores of people."
Global Impact of Teachings
The Prime Minister highlighted the worldwide reach of Sai Baba's philosophy, noting that devotees across 140 countries are finding new illumination and direction through his teachings. He characterized the centenary as a celebration of universal love, peace, and service that transcends geographical boundaries.
Modi particularly emphasized the concept of 'Seva' (selfless service) as foundational to Indian civilization. "All our diverse spiritual and philosophical traditions ultimately converge on this singular principle, whether one follows the path of devotion, knowledge, or action," he explained.
Connecting Spirituality with National Development
The Prime Minister connected Baba's teachings with contemporary governance, pointing out that his administration's extensive social welfare programs for underprivileged communities are now gaining international recognition in global forums.
He also reinforced the importance of the 'local for vocal' initiative, describing it as crucial for transforming India into a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). Modi stressed that the spirit of self-reliance aligns with the broader vision of national progress.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister visited Puttaparthi to offer his respects at the Mahasamadhi of Sathya Sai Baba, where priests conducted traditional Vedic rituals to bless him.
Modi observed that Sai Baba's message has never been confined to scriptures, lectures, or ashram boundaries. "From urban centers to isolated villages, from educational institutions to tribal communities, there's an extraordinary movement of cultural values, education, and healthcare services throughout India," he noted.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust and associated organizations are systematically advancing service activities in an organized, institutionalized, and sustainable manner, creating a practical model for others to emulate.
