Military History Pavilion Draws Crowds at New Delhi World Book Fair 2026
Military History Pavilion Attracts Visitors at Delhi Book Fair

The New Delhi World Book Fair 2026 has a standout attraction this year. A thematic pavilion dedicated to India's military history is drawing large crowds of visitors. People are flocking to see this curated display of the armed forces' legacy.

Pavilion Design and Layout

The pavilion occupies space at Bharat Mandapam, where the fair runs from January 10 to 18. It follows the fair's central theme of "Indian Military History: Valour and Wisdom @75." The design cleverly incorporates military academy architecture.

Visitors enter through a heritage-style red-and-white gateway. This entrance models the Chetwode Building of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. At the far end, a large bookshelf anchors the space. This shelf takes inspiration from the Sudan Block of the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla.

Books and Reading Area

The shelves carry numerous books on military topics. Titles cover India's role in both World Wars, naval history including aircraft carriers, the 1971 India-Pakistan war, and contemporary strategic affairs. A staff member at the pavilion shared his observations.

"People have really appreciated this pavilion," he said. "Many visitors come, pick a book, and sit in front of the Sudan Block replica to read. They immerse themselves in the moment." The middle of the pavilion features a stage area. Authors and military researchers give talks here regularly.

Historical Displays and Exhibits

The pavilion traces major milestones in India's military journey since Independence. It covers events from the 1947–48 war to Operation Sindoor in 2025. Large wall panels display archival material and interactive exhibits.

One section presents a collage of archival newspaper clippings. These highlight significant events like the Hyderabad police action of 1948, the 1971 war, the 1999 Kargil conflict, and recent military operations including Operation Sindoor. A separate wall panel documents the expanding role of women in the Indian armed forces.

Ancient Texts and Philosophy

Another interesting section brings together verses from ancient Indian texts. Excerpts come from the Yajurveda, Dhanurveda, Arthashastra, Bhagavad Gita and Nitisara. These focus on themes of duty, sacrifice and warfare.

The texts appear digitally on a series of screens. Explanatory panels accompany them, outlining their philosophical context for modern readers.

Military Hardware Displays

Near the main entrance, visitors encounter a model of the Arjun main battle tank. It stands against a backdrop inspired by the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. The display bears the slogan "Serve With Honour."

Nearby displays represent key naval and air force platforms. One depicts the Indian Naval Academy at INS Ezhimala. Another features a fighter aircraft model. This area has become a popular photo stop for fair attendees.

Honoring Gallantry

A dedicated gallery honors all 21 recipients of the Param Vir Chakra. This is India's highest wartime gallantry award. In front of this gallery, a sculptural installation commemorates India's victory in the Kargil war.

Another large panel titled "Saga of Valour" maps the armed forces' journey through major conflicts since Independence. It includes the wars of 1947–48, 1965 and 1971. A digital screen alongside plays a rotating montage of images. These include visuals from the tri-services press briefing on Operation Sindoor held last May.

Interactive Experiences

The pavilion incorporates virtual reality kiosks for an immersive experience. Visitors can take a simulated walk onboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. They can also experience a cockpit-like simulation of an Indian Air Force aircraft.

Staff members report steady interest in the VR section. They note that children particularly enjoy these interactive displays.

Fair Context and Reception

This year's World Book Fair also marks 150 years of Vande Mataram. It coincides with the birth anniversary year of freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Organizers observe that the military history pavilion has stood out for its broad appeal.

It draws readers, history enthusiasts and families alike. Over the past several days, it has consistently attracted visitors seeking both education and inspiration about India's military heritage.
