Bengaluru Hosts Sixth Dr Maya Rao Kathak and Choreography Conference

The vibrant city of Bengaluru recently became the epicenter of classical dance as it hosted the sixth edition of the Dr Maya Rao Kathak and Choreography Conference. This prestigious event took place at the Sabha venue over the weekend of January 31 and February 1, 2026, drawing artists, scholars, and enthusiasts from across the globe. The conference served as a grand tribute to the enduring legacy of Kathak, a North Indian classical dance form, while exploring innovative cross-cultural collaborations.

Celebrating Kathak's Rich Heritage

The two-day conference was meticulously curated to honor the profound contributions of Dr Maya Rao, a pioneering figure in Kathak choreography who played a pivotal role in popularizing this art form in South India. Co-curated by Dr Anita Ratnam, a renowned performer and scholar, Shoba Narayan, an esteemed author-journalist, and Madhu Nataraj, the head of the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography (NIKC) and daughter of Dr Maya Rao, the event featured a diverse array of activities. Attendees were treated to captivating performances by various artists, engaging panel discussions, and an immersive physical exhibit titled ETHOS|ECHOES|EXPRESSIONS.

This exhibit offered a visual journey through the decades, displaying photographs of iconic Kathak performances and key figures, alongside traditional costumes and accessories used in the dance. Notably, it included personal artifacts such as a set of ghunghroos belonging to the late Shambhu Maharaj, a Padma Shree awardee and guru of the Lucknow school of Kathak, who mentored luminaries like Dr Maya Rao and Birju Maharaj. Musical instruments and other performance items further enriched the display, providing a comprehensive look at Kathak's evolution and cultural significance.

Insights from Panel Discussions and Keynote Addresses

The conference kicked off with a keynote address by Sandhya Purecha, a Bharatnatyam expert and Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, setting the tone for deep intellectual engagement. Panel discussions featured a lineup of distinguished speakers, including Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, a Malaysian exponent of Odissi and Bharatnatyam, and historian Dr Vikram Sampath. These sessions delved into topics such as the historical roots of Kathak, its adaptation in modern times, and the importance of preserving traditional arts while fostering innovation. The dialogues underscored the dance form's relevance in contemporary society and its potential for global outreach.

Fusion Performance: Kathak Meets Flamenco

A highlight of the event was the groundbreaking fusion performance titled Asha Esperanza, which brought together Kathak artistes from NIKC and members of Flamenco sin Fronteras, a Singapore-based group. Artistic Director Antonio Vargas, one of the most acclaimed Flamenco artistes of the past decade, was present to oversee this collaborative effort. The performers spent approximately two months preparing the routine, which masterfully synergized the rhythmic footwork and expressive movements of both dance styles. Rather than merely alternating between forms, the artists highlighted their similarities, at times incorporating elements of the other style into their own, creating a seamless blend that captivated the audience.

Japanese flamenco artiste Toshio, currently based in Singapore, shared insights into the cultural connections between Flamenco and Kathak. He explained, "Flamenco and Kathak share a similar origin, as the Romani, who are the creators of flamenco, migrated to southern Spain from India. This historical link is evident in their footwork, rhythm, and musicality, with many overlapping points. Our collaboration, which began almost a decade ago, has shown that this cultural exchange blends beautifully, fostering mutual appreciation and artistic growth." This performance not only showcased the technical prowess of the dancers but also emphasized the universal language of dance in bridging cultural divides.

Legacy and Future of Kathak

The Dr Maya Rao Kathak and Choreography Conference stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Kathak and its ability to evolve through cross-cultural dialogues. By integrating traditional elements with contemporary innovations like the Flamenco fusion, the event highlighted the dance form's dynamic nature and its potential for global resonance. As Bengaluru continues to be a hub for artistic expression, such conferences play a crucial role in preserving heritage while inspiring future generations of dancers and choreographers. The success of this edition reaffirms the importance of such platforms in promoting India's rich cultural tapestry on the world stage.
