Karnataka Chief Minister Inaugurates Sangolli Rayanna Museum in Nandagad
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the Veerabhoomi, also known as the Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna Museum, in Nandagad on Monday. This significant cultural project stands at the very spot where the freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna was hanged by the British.
A Modern Tribute to a Freedom Fighter
The museum is a major development built at a cost of Rs 70 crore. It spans 13 acres of land and utilizes modern technology to vividly depict the life story and struggles of Sangolli Rayanna. The project aims to preserve and showcase his legacy for future generations.
Speaking after the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced further plans for the site. He stated that the graves of the six other martyrs who fought alongside Rayanna against British rule will also be developed. This work will proceed alongside the ongoing development of the Rayanna Samadhi site.
Additional Developments and Dedications
The Chief Minister also dedicated a statue of Krantiveer Rayanna located in a lake near the newly opened museum. Furthermore, he performed the bhoomi puja for various development works being undertaken by the Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna Area Development Authority.
This authority, established a decade ago, has been responsible for developing both Sangolli, the birthplace of Rayanna, and Nandagad, the place of his martyrdom. In 2024, a Sainik School named Shaurya Bhoomi was inaugurated in Sangolli village. Siddaramaiah noted that 388 students are currently enrolled at this institution.
Emphasis on Kannada Language and Patriotism
During his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of the Kannada language. "Everyone living in Karnataka should speak Kannada. An environment should be created where everyone can speak Kannada," Siddaramaiah said.
Several ministers also spoke at the event, highlighting the project's significance. District Minister Satish Jarkiholi recalled that the bhoomi puja for Veerabhoomi was first performed in 2013 to reveal Rayanna's life and history. He mentioned that the Public Works Department has undertaken many projects, including the current construction of three bridges in Khanapur taluk.
Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar described Rayanna as a symbol of patriotism, courage, and self-respect. She expressed hope that the dedicated land of heroes would become a national monument.
Shivaraj Tangadagi, the Minister for Kannada and Culture, predicted that understanding the history of figures like Kittur Channamma and Sangolli Rayanna would have a significant impact at both state and national levels in the coming days.
Urban Development Minister Bhairathi Suresh stated that constructing Veerabhoomi in Nandagad is a meaningful way to remember Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna.
Local Appeals for Development
MLA Vitthal Halagekar, who presided over the program, appealed directly to the Chief Minister. He requested special funds for several local projects in the Khanapura constituency:
- Widening of the Khanapura-Kittur road.
- Development of the Handibadaganath Temple.
- PRD roadworks.
- Additional funds for the overall development of the Khanapura constituency.
The inauguration marks a major step in commemorating Karnataka's rich history of resistance and honoring one of its most revered freedom fighters.
