Kanpur Sees Massive Turnout for Makar Sankranti Ganga Bath Despite Biting Cold
Kanpur witnessed a remarkable display of faith on Makar Sankranti morning. Devotees braved the intense cold to take a holy dip in the Ganga. The temperature dropped to 3.6 degrees Celsius, marking the second coldest night of the season. Yet, this did not deter the faithful from their sacred ritual.
Early Morning Rush at Ganga Ghats
People started gathering at the river ghats from as early as 5 am. They rolled out of bed in the dark, chilly hours. Families arrived in large numbers, with women, children, and youth all participating. The initial turnout was slow, but crowds swelled significantly after sunrise. Everyone seemed eager to soak in the festive spirit and perform traditional rites.
Administration Ensures Smooth and Safe Celebrations
The district administration anticipated heavy footfall. They made special arrangements at all major ghats. These included Brahmavart Ghat in Bithoor, Sarsaiya Ghat, Parmat Ghat, Nana Rao Ghat, and Atal Ghat. Police and water police personnel were deployed adequately. Designated bathing areas were clearly marked to ensure everyone's safety.
Rituals, Prayers, and Charitable Acts
After taking the holy dip, devotees offered prayers to Lord Shiv and the Sun God. Religious belief holds that performing rituals on Makar Sankranti pleases these deities. They then bestow prosperity and well-being upon the devotees. Charity formed a crucial part of the day's observances.
Many people donated raw materials for making khichdi. These included rice, lentils, and salt. They also gave sesame seeds and woollen clothes to the needy. Some devotees from rural areas prepared khichdi right on the riverbank. They consumed it as prasad, a blessed offering.
Bhandaras and Temple Visits Add to Festive Fervor
The city saw numerous bhandaras, or community kitchens, at various locations. Organisers distributed khichdi prasad to road commuters and visitors. A strong rush persisted at these stalls throughout the day, lasting until sunset. Several devotees also visited temples to offer special prayers. They donated various items to temple priests as part of the festive customs.
The collective spirit of devotion and community shone brightly in Kanpur. Despite the severe cold, the celebrations proceeded smoothly and joyfully.
