Puri Jagannath Temple Suspends Servitor for Issuing Fake Receipt to Pilgrim
Jagannath Temple Suspends Servitor Over Fake Receipt Scam

Puri's Jagannath Temple Takes Action Against Servitor for Fraudulent Receipt

In a significant disciplinary move, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration in Puri has suspended a servitor, Ranjit Kar, for allegedly issuing a counterfeit receipt to a pilgrim. The fraudulent document was purportedly for permission to tie a ceremonial temple flag atop the sacred shrine, highlighting concerns over misconduct within the temple's operations.

Incident Unfolds with Pilgrim from Hyderabad

The scam came to light after a pilgrim from Hyderabad, identified as Bijendra Kedia, was escorted to the temple's branch office by the servitor on April 1. During this visit, Kar presented a receipt that claimed authorization for tying a 14-hand flag on the temple, a ritual often sought by devotees. However, upon closer verification by temple officials, the receipt was discovered to be forged, with no fee deposited in Kedia's name for the intended ritual.

Investigation and Admission of Guilt

Following the discovery, an inquiry was launched by the temple administration. During the proceedings, Ranjit Kar reportedly admitted before the temple supervisor that he had indeed issued the fake receipt. The administration then sought a formal explanation from him regarding his actions. After reviewing his response, which was deemed unsatisfactory, the decision was made to suspend him, with the suspension taking effect on Tuesday.

Six-Month Suspension and Strict Warnings

Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee announced that the suspension will remain in force for a period of six months. In a stern warning, the administration emphasized that if Kar attempts to influence or threaten any other servitors during this suspension period, stricter disciplinary actions may be imposed. This step underscores the temple's commitment to maintaining integrity and preventing such fraudulent activities in the future.

The incident has sparked discussions about the need for enhanced oversight and transparency in temple rituals, ensuring that pilgrims are not exploited. Authorities are urging devotees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent similar occurrences.
