Indian Students in Dubai Create Viral Musical Tribute to UAE with Traditional Instruments

A heartwarming video showcasing immense patriotism and gratitude towards the United Arab Emirates has captured global attention online, spreading a powerful message of cultural unity and respect. The clip features 13 Indian students from expatriate families in the emirate coming together to perform a unique instrumental rendition of the UAE's national anthem, Ishy Bilady (Long Live My Country), using traditional Indian musical instruments.

Emotional Performance by Dubai-Based Students Gains Widespread Recognition

Created by the Dubai-based performing arts centre Malhaar, the video shows schoolchildren skillfully playing instruments such as the tabla, sitar, harmonium, and others to create a beautiful musical version of the anthem. The centre described the production as an "offering of harmony, friendship and shared cultural respect," highlighting its significance in fostering international bonds.

What began as a simple creative idea quickly transformed into a national moment, earning recognition from institutional pages and authorities. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) acknowledged the video, and it was widely shared by India's Ambassador to the UAE and the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi, amplifying its reach and impact.

Inspiration Behind the Viral Video: A Message of Unity

According to Jogiraj Sikidar, Founder and Director of Malhaar Centre, the inspiration for the video came from a profound statement by UAE President and Ruler Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. "Soon after the war started, I was driving and noticed a hoarding that said, ‘In the UAE, we are all Emirati’, and that really stayed with me," Sikidar explained. He added, "I have been in the UAE for 20 years, and while many call it their second home, I call it my first. I feel deeply rooted in this country; it has given me so much."

The idea was brought to life in collaboration with a third-generation UAE friend, with the team opting for all-white clothing to symbolize purity, accented only by colors representing the UAE flag. Sikidar emphasized the authenticity of the performance, noting, "We did not use any electronic instruments or visual or audio effects — just acoustic instruments played by the children."

Overwhelming Social Media Reactions and Praise

The video has resonated deeply across social media platforms, with users commending the children's dedication and the spirit of nationalism it embodies. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Soul-stirring! Indian kids blending tabla & sitar into 'Ishy Bilady' pure harmony! India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the Emirates: joint Desert Cyclone exercises, counter-terror intel sharing & strategic defence partnership for shared peace & security. Family forged in sand & steel—together, unbreakable!"

Other reactions included:

  • "God bless UAE... Thank you for this wonderful performance... It shows how much we love UAE"
  • "Art and music are so important in this world, especially in the current situation. Music makes you calmer, rational, and at peace. Music brings souls together, making this world a better place to live. Congratulations to these children."

Sikidar shared that the video has touched a wide audience, stating, "I've received calls from CEOs, homemakers, teachers and principals, it has really resonated with them." This widespread appreciation underscores the video's role in promoting cultural understanding and emotional connection.

Background on the UAE National Anthem

The national anthem of the UAE, Ishy Bilady, was officially adopted in December 1971 following the country's formation. The music was composed by Egyptian composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab in 1971, with the lyrics written by Dr. Aref Al Sheikh Abdullah Al Hassan in 1986. This historical context adds depth to the students' tribute, linking past and present through music.

This viral video serves as a testament to the power of art and music in bridging cultures, celebrating shared values, and inspiring unity in today's interconnected world.
