Hyderabad's Sankranti 2024: Mega Drone Shows, Hot Air Balloons & Kite Festival
Hyderabad's Sankranti: Drone Races, Balloons & Kite Fest

Hyderabad is set for a spectacular Makar Sankranti celebration this year, with the Telangana government announcing a series of mega events that blend cutting-edge technology with traditional festivities. Alongside the beloved annual International Kite and Sweets Festival, the state will host innovative drone displays and a majestic hot air balloon show across multiple city locations.

A Sky-High Technological Spectacle

Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao unveiled the plans on Wednesday, highlighting a first-of-its-kind drone show at Gachibowli Stadium on January 16 and 17. The event is designed to showcase a unique fusion of sport, technology, and culture, illustrating India's evolution from rich heritage to modern innovation.

Organised by Whoopmasters India, the show will feature an aerial drone race where pilots will compete on standardised tracks. Adding to the excitement will be a mid-air drone football game, a fast-paced contest played inside the main stadium with two teams of four football-shaped drones. Bikash Dash of Whoopmasters India explained that the visual presentations will also highlight Telangana's major tourist destinations, creating a digital tapestry in the sky.

Hot Air Balloons and Traditional Festivities

Parallel to the drone spectacle, a hot air balloon show will captivate audiences from January 16 to 18. Featuring more than 15 colourful balloons flying above 2,500 feet, the event includes morning flights on Hyderabad's outskirts and a mesmerizing 'Night Glow' display at the Parade Grounds in the evenings. M Chouhan of SkyWaltz Balloon Safari, the organiser, assured that all activities will strictly comply with DGCA regulations, with commercially licensed pilots and certified safety professionals overseeing operations. The balloons will be free-flying, launching from one point and landing at another, guided by the wind.

The cornerstone of the celebrations remains the annual International Kite and Sweets Festival at Parade Grounds from January 13 to 15. This edition will see participation from 40 international kite flyers representing 19 countries and 55 flyers from 15 Indian states. The accompanying sweets festival promises a delightful spread with over 1,200 varieties of traditional sweets and Telangana delicacies across 60 stalls, curated by Hyderabad residents hailing from other states.

A Cultural Extravaganza for All

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, 100 handloom and handicraft stalls will be set up, complemented by live folk cultural performances. The government has made entry to the kite and sweets festival completely free for the public. Special arrangements for public transport and discounts on ride-hailing services will ensure easy accessibility for all visitors.

This multi-faceted festival underscores Telangana's commitment to promoting tourism and local culture through innovative and inclusive events. Tickets for the drone and hot air balloon shows are available for booking on various online platforms, inviting residents and tourists to experience an unforgettable Sankranti in Hyderabad.
