In Guwahati, a profound sense of loss permeates the air following the passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, yet Bihu committees across the city are steadfastly preparing to observe Rongali Bihu—the vibrant Assamese New Year. This year's festivities will uniquely intertwine joyous celebration with heartfelt remembrance, honoring the immense cultural legacy left by the beloved artist.
Conscious Efforts to Preserve a Musical Legacy
Organizers have confirmed that while preparations are proceeding with full enthusiasm, there is a deliberate and conscious effort to pay homage to Zubeen Garg's contributions. Several committees have collectively decided to dedicate the inaugural day of the new year to his memory, scheduling local artists to perform his iconic songs as a living tribute.
Rubul Kalita, president of the Paschim Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan, elaborated on this poignant decision. "Initially, we contemplated cancelling the Bihu programme altogether," he shared. "However, we reflected on Zubeen's inherently positive spirit—he would never have endorsed such a cancellation. Avoiding celebration would have felt like neglecting his enduring legacy. Zubeen was a staple performer at Bihu functions, so this year will be markedly different with a more subdued, low-key observance. We have officially designated the 14th of this month as a tribute day, featuring performances of his songs."
Kalita fondly recalled Zubeen's early career, noting that the singer's first performance took place at Sonaram field in Bharalumukh, where he accompanied Jitul Sonowal on guitar—a humble beginning that blossomed into a storied career.
City-Wide Tributes and Solemn Moments
The Noonmati Bihu Sanmilan members expressed deep sorrow, remembering Zubeen's consistent presence at every Bihu event. To commemorate his life, they plan to observe a moment of silence followed by collective renditions of his beloved tracks, ensuring his voice echoes through the celebrations.
Similarly, in the Chandmari area, the Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan is actively preparing for the festival while incorporating tributes to Zubeen. Himanta Thakuriya, general secretary of the committee, emphasized the importance of proceeding with the event. "As painful as his absence is, cancelling the programme would be inappropriate," he stated. "Numerous community members eagerly anticipate this day, and many artists are involved. Cancellation would demoralize them. We believe even Zubeen himself would have disagreed with halting the festivities."
Artistic Solidarity and Respectful Declinations
Discussions among organizers briefly included the possibility of inviting prominent artists like Papon to participate. However, in a gesture of respect and mourning, Papon reportedly declined to perform, aligning with the somber yet celebratory tone of the occasion.
