Goencho Carnival Returns to Goa with Parades and Floats

February brings more than just romance to Goa. The state prepares for a major cultural celebration. The Goencho Carnival returns from February 13 to 17. Streets will fill with bright colors, festive banners, and lively music. An atmosphere of pure excitement will take over.

A Tradition of Colorful Floats

The carnival features a variety of parade floats. These displays showcase Goan traditions, culture, art, and festive spirit. For 28 years, Raul Pereira from Quepem has actively participated. His journey started in 1998. He won first place in a Panjim parade that year.

"When I began, it was about gathering friends and neighbors," Pereira says. "We became the toddy tappers. We presented the same idea at the Panjim Carnival parade. It won first place. Ever since, I've taken special interest in showcasing Goan tradition."

This Year's Theme and King Momo

This year's theme aligns with the Department of Tourism's vision. It emphasizes responsible celebration, cleanliness, safety, and community participation. The much-awaited King Momo has been elected for the parade. Cedric da Costa is the newly-crowned King Momo.

"This is my first time being King Momo, and I'm very excited," da Costa shares. "The king's ceremonial attire is underway. I'm thrilled to be part of this celebration."
