Tragedy Strikes During Holy Ritual Ahead of Goa's Lairai Festival
A solemn atmosphere has descended upon the community in Bicholim, Goa, following a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday afternoon. A 23-year-old man, identified as Damodar Naik from Vithalapur in Sanquelim, drowned in the Vathadev river while performing a ritual bath as part of his religious observances.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Naik was observing a strict fast as a 'dhond' in preparation for the upcoming Lairai jatra, a significant festival scheduled to take place next week at Shirgao. According to police reports, the young man stepped into the river for a holy dip, a common practice among devotees during such religious periods. However, tragedy struck when he entered the water.
Police investigation suggests that Naik, who was known to be an epilepsy patient, likely suffered a seizure while in the river. This medical episode is believed to have caused him to lose consciousness, leading to the drowning. Witnesses at the scene reported that other devotees were also bathing in the river at the same time, and Naik's father was present on the riverbank when the incident occurred.
Discovery and Medical Response
Alarmingly, Naik's disappearance went unnoticed for a considerable period amidst the ongoing religious activities. It was only after some time that he was discovered in the water by fellow devotees. He was immediately rushed to the Bicholim Community Health Centre in a desperate attempt to save his life.
Medical professionals at the health centre examined Naik upon arrival and declared him 'brought dead,' confirming that he had already succumbed to the drowning before reaching medical facilities. The local police have registered the case and are conducting further investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Religious Context of the 'Dhond' Tradition
The incident has cast a shadow over the traditional preparations for the Lairai jatra, an important cultural and religious event in the region. Devotees of goddess Lairai, who take on the role of 'dhonds,' typically begin observing rigorous fasts approximately five days before the festival commences.
These observances include various rituals and abstentions, with the holy bath being a significant component of the spiritual preparation. On the day of the festival itself, all participating dhonds gather at Shirgao to complete their religious duties and participate in the celebrations.
The community is now grappling with this unexpected loss during what should have been a period of spiritual reflection and anticipation. Local authorities have urged devotees to exercise extreme caution during religious rituals involving water bodies, particularly those with pre-existing medical conditions.
