Foreign Tourists Immerse in Hampi's Holi Festivities at UNESCO Site
The ancient ruins of Hampi in Vijayanagara district witnessed an extraordinary fusion of cultures on Wednesday as the UNESCO World Heritage Site became the backdrop for vibrant Holi celebrations. Hundreds of foreign visitors who had been staying in Hampi for several days enthusiastically participated in the festivities alongside local residents, transforming the historical landscape into a canvas of colours and joy.
Centers of Celebration and Cultural Exchange
The celebrations were particularly lively in several key locations throughout the heritage site. The area in front of the iconic Virupaksha Temple served as a primary gathering point, where tourists and locals mingled freely, smearing colours on one another with cheerful greetings of "Happy Holi." The festivities extended along the historic Rajbidi, also known as King's Avenue, creating a picturesque scene against the ancient architecture.
Additional celebration hubs included the area near the Basavanna Mantapa opposite the temple and the scenic banks of the Tungabhadra River, where revellers enjoyed the water alongside their colourful celebrations. The joyful atmosphere spread beyond the immediate temple surroundings to encompass the Kamalapur and Kaddirampur routes, the bus stand area, and even reached the vicinity of the Sasivekalu Ganesha monument.

Throughout the celebrations, the rhythmic beats of local drums provided an energetic soundtrack as visitors danced alongside residents, creating an impromptu display of cultural harmony. The enthusiastic participation of international tourists once again highlighted Hampi's growing reputation as not just an archaeological wonder but also a festive and welcoming destination that bridges global cultures.
To ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the celebrations, comprehensive security arrangements were implemented. SP S Jahnavi personally visited the area to review security protocols, while DSP Dr T Manjunath, CPI Rajesh Bhatagurki, and other officers coordinated tight police deployment throughout the festivities, allowing participants to celebrate freely while maintaining order.
