In a significant gathering in Mysuru, academic and cultural leaders have issued a compelling call for the authentic, systematic documentation of India's rich and diverse cultural traditions. The three-day workshop titled 'Ethnography and Documentation of Culture,' which commenced on Sunday at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), brought together scholars, researchers, and cultural practitioners from across the nation to address critical gaps in indigenous cultural preservation.
Field-Based Learning and Ethnographic Importance
Sunita Reddy, faculty from Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health (CSMCH), School of Social Sciences, set the tone by emphasizing the necessity for authentic documentation of India's varied cultural practices. She encouraged participants to actively engage in fieldwork-based learning, highlighting ethnography as an immersive research method that captures the lived realities of communities beyond mere theoretical constructs. "Ethnography allows us to understand cultures from within, providing insights that written records alone cannot convey," she remarked during the inaugural session.

Chamarajanagar University Vice-Chancellor MR Gangadhar underscored the urgency of preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage amidst rapid globalization. He stated that culture forms the essence of human identity and warned that modernization and digitalization pose significant challenges to traditional knowledge systems. "Ethnography is not just a research tool; it is a means of understanding communities through empathy and direct engagement," Gangadhar emphasized. He also noted the role of technology, such as audiovisual tools and digital archives, but stressed that these must complement human insight rather than replace it.

Devaraju A, Commissioner of the Department of Archaeology and Museums in Mysuru, pointed out that India has often relied on external narratives due to deficiencies in indigenous documentation practices. He called for scientific and authentic documentation to reclaim and preserve the nation's cultural legacy. "We must take ownership of our stories and ensure they are recorded accurately for future generations," he asserted.

The workshop is jointly organized by the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Anthropos India Foundation (AIF), and CIIL, with the primary goal of strengthening ethnographic research and documentation practices. Amitabh Pande, Director of IGRMS in Bhopal, outlined the objectives, stressing the importance of practical application in research. He advocated for a continuous process of learning, unlearning, and relearning in ethnographic practice. "This program adopts an interactive, participant-driven approach to foster critical thinking and collaborative learning," Pande explained.
