Syro-Malabar Church Issues Stern Condemnation Over Defamatory Posters Targeting Archbishop Pamplany in Kochi

In the city of Kochi, while a recent resolution had somewhat reduced clashes related to the ongoing Holy Mass controversy within the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, fresh disputes have erupted. The Syro-Malabar Church released an official statement on Saturday night, responding to allegations that a group of laity activists had pasted posters insulting Mar Joseph Pamplany, who serves as the Archbishop of Thalassery and the Metropolitan Vicar of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese.

Church Decries Defamatory Actions as Deplorable and Anti-Church

The statement from the Church authorities detailed that a specific faction has persistently displayed defamatory images of the Major Archbishop and Mar Pamplany outside the historic St Mary's Cathedral Basilica in Ernakulam. Additionally, these individuals have affixed pictures of the prelates on the walls of the Archbishop's House and surrounding areas. In a particularly egregious incident, under the cover of darkness, Mar Pamplany's image was depicted in a derogatory manner on the wall of the Thalassery Archbishop's House. The Church characterized this act as extremely deplorable and unacceptable.

Furthermore, the statement emphasized that the actions of this group constitute anti-Church activities. They have consistently maligned the Church, its leadership, and its bishops by spreading unfounded claims that Mar Pamplany is acting against the directives of the Pope and the Synod. This persistent campaign of defamation has been a source of significant concern for the ecclesiastical authorities.

Background on the Holy Mass Dispute and Special Permissions

The controversy stems from the implementation of the unified Holy Mass in the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. Unlike other dioceses where it was seamlessly adopted, the Synod granted special permission for a gradual implementation here, prioritizing Church unity and harmony. Once this decision was put into effect, the previously turbulent pastoral environment within the Archdiocese began to show signs of calming down.

However, a group that opposed this special permission from the outset escalated their protests. On December 10, 2025, they occupied St Mary's Basilica in Ernakulam, disrupting holy services by maintaining a day-and-night presence. This occupation directly challenged the Church's authority and disrupted the spiritual peace of the community.

Synod's Appeal for Peace and Continued Protests

In a circular issued on January 10, following the first session of the 34th Synod held from January 6 to 10, the Synod Fathers made a heartfelt appeal. They urged everyone to accept the decision to gradually implement the unified Holy Mass offering, acknowledging the special circumstances of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. The Synod also called on all involved parties to abandon protest methods that do not align with Christian consciousness and to wholeheartedly embrace the path of peace and reconciliation.

Despite this earnest appeal from the highest ecclesiastical body, the statement noted that a faction of people has continued their protests unabated. Their refusal to heed the Synod's call for peace has perpetuated the tensions, undermining the Church's efforts to foster unity and resolve the Holy Mass row amicably.

The Syro-Malabar Church's statement serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges within the Archdiocese, highlighting the need for dialogue and respect to overcome these divisive issues.
