Belagavi's Historic Well Rejuvenation Project Launched by Pyaas Foundation
In a significant initiative blending heritage conservation with sustainable water management, the Pyaas Foundation in Belagavi has embarked on a project to restore a 100-year-old historic well located at Vadgaon Nazar Camp. This effort aims to revive a vital water source while preserving a piece of local history.
Historical Significance and Decline of the Well
The well, originally constructed during the era of the Kurundwad Sarkar, is renowned for its robust stone masonry. For decades, it served as the primary water source for Vadgaon, with local elders recalling its reliability in providing clean drinking water year-round, thanks to a strong natural spring that prevented it from ever running dry.
Over time, however, the structure fell into neglect, suffering partial collapse and eventually becoming filled in, leaving behind only memories of its former utility. This decline highlighted the need for intervention to reclaim both its historical value and practical benefits.
Launch of Restoration Efforts with Community Support
The restoration work was formally inaugurated on Tuesday, with Belagavi Mayor Mangesh Powar initiating the project. The event saw the presence of key stakeholders, including AKP Ferrocast Managing Director Parag Bhandare, who provided a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) grant to fund the initiative.
Representatives from the Pyaas Foundation, such as President Dr. Madhav Prabhu and Secretary Dr. Preeti Doddwad, along with other office-bearers and local residents, attended the launch, underscoring the community-led nature of this environmental and heritage endeavor.
Expected Outcomes and Future Impact
According to a release from the Pyaas Foundation, once fully restored, the well is anticipated to function as a dependable water source once again. Beyond its practical utility, it will stand as a symbol of community-driven environmental responsibility and the preservation of cultural heritage.
