The festive spirit of Christmas extends beyond December 25th in Meghalaya, with the hill capital of Shillong immersing itself in the traditions of Boxing Day this Friday. The day, dedicated to charity and community feasting, showcases the region's deep-rooted Christian ethos and its message of universal brotherhood.
The Significance of Boxing Day and Acts of Charity
Observed on the day after Christmas, which is also the Feast of St Stephen, Boxing Day holds special significance in the Christian-majority state. A church elder explained that the day derives its name from the 'alms boxes' placed in churches on Christmas Day. Worshippers place gifts for the less fortunate in these boxes, which are ceremoniously opened on Boxing Day. This practice of giving is a cornerstone of the celebrations, with churches across denominations distributing clothes and essential items to the needy throughout the Christmas season.
This spirit of generosity transcends community lines. On Christmas Day, people across Shillong exchanged greetings and good wishes, irrespective of caste, creed, or religious affiliation. The cosmopolitan hill city and other parts of Meghalaya were united in the festive cheer, highlighting the inclusive nature of the celebrations.
Grand Community Feasts: 'Bam Khana Krismas' Unite All
The heart of the Boxing Day celebrations lies in the grand community feasts, known locally as 'Bam Khana Krismas' in the Khasi language. These feasts, organized by churches of various denominations, are occasions of great joy and camaraderie. Food is prepared in a common kitchen and shared among all, fostering a sense of togetherness and goodwill.
"Christmas is a time for sharing and caring for each other and promoting love and peace among all," shared a woman while serving local delicacies at one such feast. "Community feasts bring together everybody in an atmosphere of goodwill." These feasts are not confined to Shillong alone but are also being organized in the Jaintia and Garo Hills regions, and will continue up to the New Year.
Shillong Dazzles as a Festive Tourist Haven
Shillong, with its landscape dotted with churches and chapels, is currently abuzz with festivities. The city is decked in dazzling lights, with government offices, hospitals, private homes, markets, and street corners glowing brightly. Parks and scenic spots are filled with friends and families enjoying the holiday atmosphere.
This transformation into a winter wonderland of evergreen pines and exotic orchids has been attracting a record number of tourists from across the northeast, particularly neighbouring Assam and West Bengal, as well as other parts of India and abroad. They are flocking to the city to partake in the unique Christmas and New Year festivities.
With state government offices and educational institutions closed for the holidays, Shillong has morphed into a relaxed hill station of leisure, fun, and sunshine, providing a warm respite from the otherwise chilly winter days and cold nights. The city truly embodies the spirit of peace, joy, and communal harmony during this special season.
