Bodh Mahotsav Inaugurated in Gaya with Buddhist Chants and Cultural Performances
The three-day annual Bodh Mahotsav was officially declared open on Thursday evening in Gaya, Bihar, amidst the resonant chanting of Buddhist sutras by monks from both the Mahayana and Theravada traditions. The inaugural ceremony took place at the Kalachakra ground, located approximately 200 metres north-west of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mahabodhi Mahavihara. This sacred venue will host a series of cultural programmes, particularly during the evening hours, throughout the festival.
Ministerial Inauguration and Key Addresses
The event was inaugurated by Union Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, Jitan Ram Manjhi, along with State Tourism Minister Arun Shankar Prasad and other public representatives from Gaya district. In his address, Manjhi emphasized the profound importance of assimilating the core teachings of Buddhism, including truth, non-violence, compassion, and brotherhood. He articulated that embracing these values would significantly contribute to India's emergence as a global leader on the world stage.
Manjhi also praised the visionary initiative of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to supply Ganga water to Gaya, Bodh Gaya, and Nawada through an extensive pipeline network, describing it as a remarkable achievement for the region. Furthermore, he revealed that discussions have been held with the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti to explore the possibility of bringing water into the Falgu river from Indrapuri. Upon the successful implementation of this project, plans are in place to develop a marine road on both banks of the river, inspired by the iconic Marine Drive.
Tourism Development and Economic Impact
State Tourism Minister Arun Shankar Prasad reiterated the government's steadfast commitment to developing diverse tourist circuits across Bihar, aimed at attracting a greater number of visitors to the state. This strategic focus is designed to create substantial employment opportunities and generate significant revenue for the local economy. Prasad highlighted the impressive tourism statistics from the previous year, noting that more than seven crore domestic tourists visited various tourist sites within Bihar, underscoring the state's growing appeal as a travel destination.
International Cultural Performances
The opening day of the Bodh Mahotsav was marked by vibrant cultural performances from international troupes. Artists from Vietnam and Thailand showcased traditional art forms deeply rooted in Buddhist heritage, captivating the audience with their exquisite presentations. Additionally, renowned Bollywood playback singer Javed Ali enthralled the gathering with his melodious performance, adding a contemporary musical flair to the traditional festivities.
Upcoming Events and Performances
During the remaining two days of the festival, attendees can look forward to performances by artists from Laos, Japan, and Sri Lanka, who will present traditional art forms from their respective countries. The cultural extravaganza will also feature performances by acclaimed artists Roop Kumar Rathore and Bhumi Trivedi, ensuring a diverse and enriching experience for all visitors. The Bodh Mahotsav continues to serve as a significant platform for promoting cultural exchange and spiritual harmony, drawing participants and spectators from across the globe to the historic city of Gaya.
