Historic Assam Palace Transforms into Museum Honoring Folk Legend

The first phase of renovation work on the palatial home of Padma Shri awardee Pratima Barua Pandey is nearing completion in Assam's Dhubri district. Located at Matiabag near Gauripur, this historic residence is set to become a museum showcasing the life and legacy of the legendary folk singer.

Renovation Progress and Timeline

Officials expect the initial renovation phase to finish by February this year. The project carries a substantial cost of around Rs 20 crore. This investment aims to preserve and highlight the rich heritage of the Gauripur royal family alongside Pratima Barua Pandey's contributions to folk music.

Government Involvement and Ceremonies

The Assam government formally took over the residence in January 2023. The acquisition cost the state Rs 15.20 crore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the renovation project on January 2, 2023. This ceremony marked the official start of the transformation efforts.

The museum will serve as a cultural hub, attracting visitors interested in Assam's artistic traditions. It promises to offer insights into the region's royal history and musical heritage. The completion of this phase represents a significant step toward realizing that vision.
