ASI Team Conducts Inspection of Mahabodhi Mahavihara Cleaning Operation
A specialized team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) conducted a comprehensive inspection on Tuesday of the ongoing hydraulic cleaning operation at the Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodh Gaya. This sacred site, recognized globally as the location where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment and subsequently achieved divinity, is undergoing meticulous conservation work under ASI supervision.
Inspection Team Composition and Assessment
The inspection was led by Hari Om, the superintending archaeologist of ASI, and included Bhanu Pratap, an engineer currently working with the archaeological body. Representing the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) were secretary Mahashweta Maharathi and member Arvind Singh, who participated in the thorough evaluation of the conservation efforts.
According to sources familiar with the inspection, the ASI team expressed overall satisfaction with the cleaning mechanism and appreciated the precautions implemented to prevent any structural damage to the ancient shrine. The team offered several constructive suggestions while acknowledging the quality of work being performed at this nearly 1,500-year-old monument, which holds UNESCO World Heritage status.
Progress and Visual Improvements Noted
BTMC secretary Mahashweta Maharathi provided detailed insights into the inspection findings, stating, "The ASI officials expressed satisfaction with the quality of the cleaning work and the erection of bamboo scaffoldings. It was observed that the black spots on the shrine structure façade, caused by the accumulation of dust and biological growth, have been effectively removed."
She further elaborated, "The temple walls now appear clean, smooth, and aesthetically restored, enhancing the visual appeal of the shrine. Approximately 70% of the bamboo scaffolding has been dismantled, indicating significant progress toward completion of the work."
Timeline and Historical Significance
The hydraulic cleaning operation, which began on February 17 this year under ASI supervision, is proceeding according to established conservation norms designed to preserve the shrine's heritage value. Maharathi confirmed that the entire process of dismantling the bamboo scaffolding is expected to conclude by the end of March, with the shrine projected to display a renewed appearance by the next Buddha Purnima celebration.
Mahavihara caretaker monk Bhikkhu Deenanand, who was present during the inspection, emphasized the site's spiritual importance, noting, "The Mahavihara holds supreme spiritual importance for Buddhists across the world as it is the place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment while practicing meditation under the banyan tree. Apart from Buddhist devotees, the enhanced visual appeal will attract numerous tourists visiting Bodh Gaya."
The ASI has been formally entrusted with the conservation and maintenance responsibilities for this ancient monument, ensuring that international preservation standards are maintained at one of Buddhism's most sacred sites. The ongoing work represents a significant effort to protect and enhance this globally recognized cultural treasure for future generations.
