AP High Court's Foreign Travel Ban for Priests Mirrors Longstanding Tirumala Tradition

The Andhra Pradesh High Court's recent ruling, which prohibits priests who have traveled abroad from performing puja within the sanctum sanctorum of temples, aligns with a practice that has been strictly implemented at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams for several decades. According to Tirumala temple chief priest AV Venugopala Deekshitulu, this guideline is deeply rooted in the temple's ancient traditions and is rigorously followed by the hereditary priestly families.

Hereditary Families Uphold Ancient Religious Codes

Deekshitulu explained that the four hereditary families ordained to perform priesthood at the Tirumala temple—the Paidipally family, Gollapalli family, Peddinti family, and Tirupatamma family—adhere strictly to the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition of worship. These families, along with descendants of Gopinathcharyulu, have maintained a ban on allowing any priest who goes abroad to perform puja inside the sanctum sanctorum. This restriction is based on ancient religious codes that discourage crossing the seas, as it is believed to compromise the ritual purity required to serve the deity.

Court Order Reinforces Spiritual Discipline

The Andhra Pradesh High Court, in its recent order, ruled that priests who have traveled abroad should not be permitted to perform puja or worship the deity within the temple's sanctum sanctorum. The court cited that such travel is considered contrary to established spiritual discipline and dietary rules. However, the court clarified that these priests may still participate in rituals conducted outside the temple premises.

Separate Arrangements for Global Religious Events

For spiritual programs like the Srinivasa Kalyanam and other events organized by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams across the globe, a distinct set of Vedic scholars is employed. Deekshitulu noted that Vedic scholars from the Veda Pathashala at Dharmagiri and private priests on contract are hired for these international events. The regular priests who perform puja inside the Tirumala temple and other TTD temples, adhering to the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition, are not assigned duties at religious events held abroad under the TTD's aegis.

This separation ensures that the sanctity and purity of the temple rituals are preserved, while still allowing for the global outreach of the temple's spiritual activities. The implementation of these guidelines highlights the temple's commitment to maintaining traditional practices in the face of modern challenges.
