Ahmedabad witnessed a spirited celebration of Uttarayan on Wednesday and Thursday, with residents embracing the kite-flying festival despite initial weather challenges. The early hours of Wednesday saw many Amdavadis struggling to keep their kites airborne due to a noticeable lack of wind. This calm condition led to thinner crowds on terraces and muted music systems during the afternoon.
Evening Breeze Revives Festive Spirit
The festival atmosphere transformed dramatically in the evening. A gentle breeze swept across the city, allowing kite revelry to soar high until twilight. Enthusiasts made the most of this opportunity, filling the sky with colorful kites. As darkness fell, fireworks illuminated Ahmedabad, marking a vibrant conclusion to the first day of Uttarayan.
Thursday continued the festive mood, with streets appearing quieter than usual. Several businesses remained closed, and traffic flowed lighter compared to normal weekdays. The city embraced a holiday-like ambiance throughout the celebrations.
Prominent Figures and Community Celebrations
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel participated in kite-flying activities amid their official schedules. The historic Walled City of Ahmedabad served as the epicenter of festivities, with many securing prized terrace spots for aerial kite battles.
Jagdip Mehta, a resident of Khadia, reported that his heritage home attracted foreign nationals and visitors from across India on Wednesday. "The celebration is unparalleled," Mehta explained. "Visitors get amazed by the overall festival mood, trying their hand at kite-flying and enjoying traditional undhiyu. Our terrace remained active with kite-flying on Thursday as well."
Krishna Patel from Vastrapur highlighted how Uttarayan fosters community bonds. "We had about fifty people on our housing society terrace at once, enjoying the festival together," Patel shared. "The calm wind in the first half was a slight dampener, but we thoroughly enjoyed the evening with kites and fireworks. Chikki and other delicacies made the experience even sweeter."
Citywide Festive Activities and Challenges
Throughout both days, citizens engaged in various festive activities. People flew kites, purchased specialized thread (manja), caps, goggles, balloons, and other festival paraphernalia. The celebrations created a bustling atmosphere across Ahmedabad.
The festival also presented challenges for emergency services. Paramedics, doctors, and animal rescuers faced a significantly higher volume of cases compared to ordinary days. Their efforts ensured safety amidst the widespread festivities.
