The 34th Episcopal Synod of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church is now underway at its headquarters in Kakkanad, Kochi. Spiritual Commencement and Synod Schedule
The first day of the synod was dedicated to spiritual reflection and prayer, setting a contemplative tone for the proceedings. Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany, who serves as the secretary of the Synod of Bishops, led these initial spiritual exercises. The formal inauguration is scheduled for 9 AM on Wednesday, to be led by the head of the Church, Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, who will light the traditional lamp. A primary focus for the synod fathers is the ongoing situation in the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese. The archdiocese has been at the centre of a prolonged dispute, and this synod is expected to deeply discuss the existing resolution framework. Furthermore, the assembly is likely to deliberate on the potential appointment of new auxiliary bishops for the troubled archdiocese, a move aimed at strengthening its governance and pastoral care.
Archbishop Thattil's Call for Collective Strength
In a related event that set the context for the synod, Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil inaugurated the Syro-Malabar Community Empowerment Year-2026. Addressing representatives from across the Church's structure, he delivered a powerful message on unity. "A community firm in faith and strong in unity can change the course of time," Thattil stated.
He elaborated that the true power of the community emerges when it transcends individual belief and actively applies shared convictions for the greater good. "Our true strength lies in the unity cultivated with a common goal among dioceses, dedicated communities, families, youth and educational-social institutions," he emphasized. Thattil concluded that only through such a renewed, collective endeavour can the Christian community hope to transform society in line with Gospel values.
The opening session saw participation from clergy and laity representing various levels of the Syro-Malabar Church, underscoring the broad engagement sought for the discussions ahead.
