Mumbai Hosts Grand Mass Wedding Ceremony for 31 Underprivileged Couples
In a heartwarming initiative aimed at supporting economically disadvantaged families, the Hazrat Shah Saqlain Academy of India and Dar-US-Saqlain Foundation organized its 21st annual mass wedding ceremony this past Sunday evening. The event took place at the YMCA ground in central Mumbai, where 31 couples solemnized their nikah in a vibrant celebration that resembled a carnival.
From Pamphlet to Matrimony: A Family's Journey
The story began when Mohammed Jafferuddin, a tailor from Nalasopara, came across a pamphlet inviting applications for weddings free of cost at a mass marriage event. Jafferuddin, eager to marry off his son Fariduddin, discussed the opportunity with family friend Hafiz Shamsher. The two families decided to proceed, leading to Fariduddin's marriage with Shamsher's daughter Sana at the mass wedding.
"We choose the couples very carefully after an intensive scrutiny and verification of their economic condition, especially girls'. Our aim is to facilitate the wedding of the underprivileged at a ceremony witnessed and blessed by some eminent personalities," said Shaikh Shahid Saqlaini, president of the foundation.
A Ceremony of Support and Celebration
The newlyweds, clad in traditional attire—brides in flaming red sharara-lehnga and grooms in white kurta-pyjama with turbans—entered this new phase of life smoothly as qazis officiated their nikah. Beyond the ceremonial aspects, the couples returned home loaded with essential items needed to set up a new household, including clothes and gifts, all funded by the foundation.
This initiative addresses a critical issue: many poor families are forced to borrow money to cover wedding expenses, often falling into debt. By organizing mass weddings, the foundation helps alleviate this financial burden, enabling families to celebrate without spending a penny.
Eminent Personalities and Historical Context
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Rajya Sabha member Milind Deora, Congress MLA Amin Patel, former minister Nawab Malik, and Sohail Khandwani, managing trustee of Mahim and Haji Ali Dargah. Each couple was accompanied by 50 guests from both the bride and groom's sides, adding to the festive atmosphere.
"Mass weddings have many benefits as they save cost, enable the poor to get their children married without spending a penny and yet enjoy the celebrations," noted Khandwani, who supports similar events in the city.
Founded over two decades ago by the late spiritual leader Hazrat Saqlain Main Huzoor, the foundation has now benefited approximately 6,500 couples through mass weddings held across various locations in India. The ceremony also featured Mohammed Ghazi Saqlaini ul Qadri, Sajjada Nasheen and custodian of the sacred shrine Aastana e Saqalainiya Sharafatiya in Bareilly Shareef, who is the son and successor of Saqlain Mian.
Broader Impact and Community Support
Such initiatives highlight the importance of community-driven efforts in addressing social challenges. By providing full financial support for weddings, the foundation not only prevents families from incurring debt but also fosters a sense of dignity and joy in matrimonial celebrations.
The success of this event underscores the ongoing need for charitable programs that assist underprivileged communities in achieving significant life milestones without financial strain. As mass weddings continue to gain traction, they serve as a model for other organizations aiming to make a tangible difference in society.
