Thiruvananthapuram Hosts 2nd Heritage Congress, Calls for Dedicated Study Centre
2nd Heritage Congress Inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram

The cultural capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, played host to the significant inauguration of the Second Heritage Congress this past Sunday. The event, meticulously organized by the Thanal Koottam Society for Cultural Heritage, was formally opened by Minister G R Anil, who set a visionary tone for the proceedings.

A Push for a Centralised Heritage Hub

In his inaugural address, Minister G R Anil underscored a critical gap in the region's cultural preservation efforts. He strongly advocated for the establishment of a dedicated centre based in the state capital. This proposed hub would focus on advanced heritage studies and systematic information gathering, aiming to become a nodal point for research and conservation activities.

The congress was chaired by noted expert M G Sasibhooshan. The inaugural session featured insights from a diverse panel of speakers, including acclaimed director Shyamaprasad, historian T P Sankaran Kutty Nair, director S V Deepak, Prathap Kizhakkemadam, Xavier Lopez, Thanal Koottam chairperson S V Sandeep, and president Sangeeth Koyikkal.

Films, Seminars, and an Architecture Exhibition

A key highlight of the congress was a curated documentary film festival. The first screening was the film 'Rani Gaidinliu', produced by Deepak and Dimple Durg for the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The festival also showcased other notable films such as 'Sandhya Santhwanam', 'Nanchinad', 'Gurudev', 'Ennittum Kanthalloor Sala', and 'Akam'.

The intellectual core of the event will unfold through seminars scheduled for January 10 and 11 at Thanjavur Ammaveedu, Padinjarekkotta. On the first day, renowned archaeologist K K Muhammed will deliver the keynote address in a session presided over by M G Sasibhooshan. This day will also witness the presentation of prestigious heritage awards.

On January 11, attendees can look forward to an interactive discussion with K K Muhammed, focusing on the pressing themes of heritage conservation and sustainable development. Adding a practical dimension to the congress, students from the Marian College of Architecture and Planning will present an urban heritage exhibition, offering fresh perspectives on conserving cityscapes.
