Birhor Women Complete Specialized Jute Craft and Rope-Making Training in Ramgarh

A significant 35-day training program focused on jute craft and traditional rope-making for 15 women from the Birhor community successfully concluded in Ramgarh on Saturday. This initiative was organized by the Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts to commemorate International Women's Day.

Empowering Indigenous Women Through Skill Development

The program aimed to provide sustainable livelihood skills to Birhor women, an indigenous tribal group, by teaching them the art of jute crafting and rope-making. These traditional techniques are not only culturally significant but also offer economic opportunities in local markets. The training was conducted with the support of the Swarnrekha Mahila Samitee, a women's committee that played a crucial role in facilitating the sessions and ensuring community engagement.

Key objectives of the initiative included:

  • Enhancing the income-generating capabilities of Birhor women through hands-on training.
  • Preserving and promoting traditional crafts that are part of the community's heritage.
  • Aligning with PVUNL's CSR goals to support women's empowerment and social development.

Impact and Future Prospects

Participants expressed enthusiasm about applying their newly acquired skills to create marketable products, such as decorative jute items and durable ropes, which can be sold locally or through cooperatives. This program is expected to boost their self-reliance and contribute to the economic upliftment of the Birhor community in the Ramgarh region.

"Such initiatives are vital for bridging gaps in skill development and fostering inclusive growth," noted a representative from PVUNL. The company plans to monitor the progress of the trainees and explore further collaborations to expand similar programs in the future.
