Kolkata Zoo Takes Action Against Record Cold to Protect Animals

Kolkata experienced its coldest January night in thirteen years last week. The temperature dropped to a chilling 10.2 degrees Celsius. In response to this severe cold, Alipore Zoo has launched a comprehensive plan to safeguard its animal residents.

Active Warming Measures for Deer, Reptiles, and Birds

The zoo management is using powerful blowers to provide warmth. These blowers target specific enclosures housing deer, various reptiles, and birds. Zoo director Tripti Sah explained the strategy to TOI.

"We recently started using blowers to keep inmates warm," said Sah. "When we notice any animals or birds becoming inactive due to the cold, we switch on the blowers. This happens mostly at night inside their shelters to maintain a comfortable temperature."

Infra-red heat lamps are also in operation. Staff members use these lamps extensively for reptiles and tortoises, whose body temperatures are particularly sensitive to environmental changes.

Ensuring Dry and Germ-Free Enclosures

The blowers serve a dual purpose. After cleaning animal enclosures with water, zoo keepers use them to dry the areas quickly. This practice prevents animals from catching colds from damp surfaces.

"We cleaned the chimpanzee enclosure with water recently," Director Sah noted. "To dry it fast, we used blowers. We must ensure the animals do not come out while the area is still wet. Preventing illness is our top priority."

With high visitor numbers during this season, the zoo is also strengthening its bio-security. Regular disinfection of enclosures helps control the germ load brought in by foot traffic.

Traditional and Dietary Support for Animal Health

Alongside modern equipment, the zoo employs traditional methods. Keepers are laying down gunny bags and paddy straw in many enclosures. These materials provide excellent insulation against the cold ground.

An official detailed further steps being taken:

  • Providing heated shelters and heat lamps.
  • Using warm bedding like straw and sacks.
  • Making dietary adjustments by adding fat-rich foods such as meat, nuts, and jaggery.
  • Modifying enclosures with coverings like gunny bags and tarps to block cold winds.

These combined efforts ensure all animals have consistent access to warmth, significantly reducing the risk of cold-related illnesses.

Weather Forecast Demands Continued Vigilance

The Meteorological Department predicts more chilly days ahead for Kolkata. Weathermen expect minimum temperatures to remain around 12 degrees Celsius for the next couple of days. Maximum temperatures will likely fluctuate between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Alipore Zoo's proactive measures demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare. The staff remains vigilant, ready to adapt their strategies as the cold spell continues over the city.
