A dramatic rescue unfolded on a busy footbridge in Ahmedabad on Wednesday evening, as a young man on the brink of suicide was pulled back to safety by a group of quick-thinking student activists.
Timely Intervention on CTM Footbridge
On Wednesday evening around 7:30 PM, a tense scene developed at the CTM footbridge. A 28-year-old man, reportedly distressed by severe family issues, had climbed over the bridge's railing and was preparing to jump. A crowd had gathered below, pleading with him to reconsider his drastic decision, but the man appeared resolute in his intent to end his life.
Swift Action by NSUI Members
The situation took a turn when members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), including leader Narayan Bharwad, were driving past the bridge. Spotting the commotion, they immediately stopped their vehicle. Bharwad, whose office is located just 300 meters from the footbridge, assessed the scene. Noticing that the man was distracted by the pleas from the crowd below, the group saw an opportunity.
They discreetly approached the man from behind. In a swift and decisive move, just as the man was about to leap, they grabbed him by his shirt. The man struggled and attempted to free himself, but the rescuers held firm and successfully pulled him back onto the safe side of the railing.
Root Cause: Overwhelming Personal Distress
After ensuring his immediate safety, the NSUI members spoke with the man to understand what led him to such a desperate act. He revealed that he was overwhelmed by a combination of personal and family problems, which had pushed him to the decision of ending his life. The timely intervention by the student union members provided a critical interruption to his plan.
This incident highlights the acute mental health crises that can unfold in public spaces and underscores the importance of community awareness and immediate intervention.
