Residents of Uttar Pradesh should brace for a noticeable chill as the state's recent spell of unseasonal warmth is set to end. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a gradual drop in temperatures over the coming days, accompanied by foggy mornings in several regions.
IMD Predicts Gradual Temperature Dip
The shift in weather patterns is attributed to two consecutive western disturbances influencing the region. Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh from the IMD's Lucknow centre confirmed that cold, dry westerly and north-westerly winds are gaining strength. This will lead to a gradual decline of approximately 2 to 4 degrees Celsius across the state within the next three to four days.
The change marks a reversal from the past few days, which recorded warmer-than-normal conditions. On Sunday, December 1, 2025, Lucknow's minimum temperature was 12°C, which was 1.8°C above the average for this time of year. The maximum temperature in the state capital hovered around 26°C.
Western and Central Districts to Bear the Brunt
Scientists indicate that the cooling will be more pronounced in the Western and Central parts of Uttar Pradesh. Here, minimum temperatures are likely to fall below the 8-10°C mark. Several districts in western UP have already experienced cooler nights, and a further dip is expected in early December.
Recorded minimum temperatures on Sunday highlight this trend:
- Bareilly: 8.0°C
- Etawah: 9.4°C
- Muzaffarnagar: 9.6°C
- Bijnor: 9.5°C
- Bulandshahr: 10.0°C
These areas are anticipated to become even colder in the days ahead.
Foggy Mornings and Dry Weather Ahead
Alongside the falling mercury, the IMD has issued a fog alert for isolated places across the state. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely during the morning hours, particularly around dawn. Some locations may also experience light fog throughout the day.
Despite the fog and cold, the overall weather is expected to remain dry. Experts advise commuters, especially those traveling early in the morning, to exercise caution due to reduced visibility caused by fog. The combination of lower temperatures and foggy conditions signals the steady approach of winter across the plains of Uttar Pradesh.
