The Tamil Nadu Police department is grieving the tragic loss of two officers who suffered fatal heart attacks while performing their duties during the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The department has expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Details of the Incidents

A statement released by the head of police force (HoPF), Sandeep Rai Rathore, confirmed that Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramakrishnan, aged 55, and Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) P Kannadasan, aged 59, collapsed on Thursday, April 23, evening, leaving the department and their families in profound grief.

DSP Ramakrishnan

Ramakrishnan, an officer of the Narcotic Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Ramanathapuram, was a seasoned veteran who joined the force as a sub-inspector in 1996. While stationed near Kalanjipatti under the Oddanchatram police limits on Thursday, he experienced severe chest pain and collapsed around 5:45 pm. Despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived. Ramakrishnan is survived by his wife, Santhana Bhama, and three daughters.

SSI P Kannadasan

In a similar tragedy in Salem district, SSI P Kannadasan of the Malliyakarai police station passed away while serving as the officer-in-charge of the mobile team for the Gangavalli assembly constituency. While monitoring a polling station in Nagiyampatti village at approximately 6:10 pm, the 59-year-old officer collapsed due to a sudden cardiac arrest.

Funeral Rites

Their mortal remains were laid to rest in their respective hometowns with full police honors, as high-ranking officials and colleagues gathered to pay their final respects.
