Trichy: Villagers from Thuraiyur in Trichy district held a road blockade on Monday, alleging that they have not been receiving adequate drinking water supply for the past several days.
Water crisis in Gandhinagar colony
According to sources, residents of Gandhinagar colony in Keerampur village near Thuraiyur have been without regular drinking water supply for the past three months. Frustrated by the prolonged shortage, they resorted to blocking the road near Perumal Malai.
Complaints ignored
The villagers claimed that despite lodging multiple complaints with the village panchayat administration and the block development officer, no proper action had been taken so far. This led to the agitation.
Officials from the police, revenue, and rural development departments arrived at the spot and held peace talks with the protesting villagers. They assured that appropriate action would be taken and proper drinking water supply would be arranged. On receiving the assurance, the villagers withdrew the blockade and dispersed.
Traffic disruption
Due to the blockade, vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road and were unable to move forward. As a result, traffic on the Thuraiyur–Perambalur road was severely affected for more than one hour.
